Eco-Drive, a unique solar technology
In 1976, CITIZEN developed the world's first light-powered analog watch. That was the beginning of everything.
We named the technology Eco-Drive in recognition of its environmentally friendly origins. With Eco-Drive, our watches generate energy even in low light, run for months, and do not require regular battery changes.
We then developed a whole range of watches - watches with multiple functions; watches that are smaller, thinner, and more beautiful, watches that everyone can identify with and even love.
And now almost all CITIZEN models are equipped with this technology.
No battery change required
With Eco-Drive, regular battery changes are no longer necessary. You no longer have to buy new batteries and no longer need a charger. Eco-Drive only needs light to keep running.
Imagine a world without Eco-Drive:
Approximately 4 million Eco-Drive watches are sold each year. This means that 4 million more watch batteries would be thrown away annually if Eco-Drive had not been introduced. Assuming the batteries are 2.3 mm thick, this would create a mountain almost as high as Mount Everest each year.
Also runs in low light
Many people think that light-powered watches need direct sunlight to charge. While the Eco-Drive charges more efficiently in strong light such as sunlight, it can also be charged by weaker, everyday light sources such as indoor fluorescent lights. This means your watch keeps running while you go about your daily life.
Runs for over six months even in the dark
Did you know that light-powered calculators only work when directly exposed to light? The special thing about Eco-Drive is its exceptional ability to charge. A single full charge is enough to power the Eco-Drive for over six months in complete darkness.
