Seiko women's automatic watch - Ref. 2706-024C - (September 1973)
This elegant Seiko ladies' watch, reference 2706-024C, was produced in September 1973 and represents the design phase in which Seiko began using technically sophisticated automatic movements in the ladies' segment – a sector then still predominantly dominated by hand-wound movements. The model combines the typical design codes of the early 1970s with remarkably robust technical features for a ladies' watch.
The dial features an exceptional turquoise-blue sunburst finish with vertical and horizontal light refraction, dramatically shifting depending on the angle of the light. A particularly distinctive feature is the nine-faceted crystal , which lends the watch depth and a pronounced geometric design – a stylistic element that Seiko primarily used on higher-end ladies' and unisex models of this era. The applied indices and hands are original, as is the characteristic day-date frame with its bilingual day-of-the-week display.
The original stainless steel bracelet, with its typical Seiko folding-link design, is in good condition for its age and completes the authentic overall impression. The case has the typical "soft tonneau" shape of the period, with smooth transitions and harmoniously integrated lugs.
The Seiko 2706 caliber – one of the most technically interesting women's watches of its time
Inside beats the Seiko caliber 2706 , a fully Japanese-designed automatic movement that ranks among the most advanced ladies' automatic movements of the early 1970s. The 27xx caliber family was conceived as a miniaturized version of the highly successful 61xx movements, optimized for ladies' models, and offers:
- automatic elevator with high gait stability
- Second stop ("hacking") in many versions
- Quick date and quick day switching
- compact workpiece diameter with outstanding reliability
Especially in the women's segment, automatic movements with comparable reliability were rare at the time, which is why the models with the 2706 caliber are increasingly valued by collectors today.
Historical background
The early 1970s were a period of intense innovation for Seiko: Grand Seiko successfully competed with Swiss chronometers, King Seiko set standards in the mid-price segment, and simultaneously, Seiko began to make some of this technical expertise available for smaller, more elegant models. The 2706-024C offered here is a good example of how Seiko positioned high-quality technology and bold design in the women's watch segment as well.
Even though this model is not part of the King Seiko or Grand Seiko lines, it carries the technical influence of that era: high manufacturing quality, reliable automatic movements and the characteristic geometric design of the 1970s, which was later found throughout the Seiko portfolio.
