Design and background
The Type II series was introduced in 1976 as a stylistic and technical evolution of the first Seiko quartz generation. It was part of an effort to refine quartz technology for everyday use – with greater accuracy, slimmer cases, and a clean, modern design.
The model 0903-8140 is characterized by its angular lines, the iridescent blue-silver dial with vertical sunburst finish and the faceted glass – a design element that is otherwise only found in higher priced models.
Historical context
The Seiko Type II was created as a direct successor to the legendary Quartz Astron (1969) and the early Quartz VFA (Very Fine Adjusted) models. While the luxury lines were developed at Suwa Seikosha , the Type II series was predominantly a product of the Daini movement , which was known for its technical experimentation.
During this period, a productive rivalry existed between the two Seiko factories – Suwa (responsible for Grand Seiko and Quartz VFA ) and Daini (responsible for King Seiko and Type II ). This internal competition significantly advanced the technical perfection of Japanese watchmaking.
The Type II thus closed the gap between the early, expensive quartz models and the later mass-market series. It is now considered a significant milestone on the path to the democratization of precise quartz technology.
