Seiko Quartz Railwayman's Pocket Watch (1985) – Ref. 7550-0010

Seiko Quartz Railwayman's Pocket Watch (1985) – Ref. 7550-0010

Rare and historically significant Seiko Railway Pocket Watch (鉄道時計), made for the Japan National Railways (国鉄 – Kokutetsu).
This example dates from 1985 and was manufactured for use by railway staff of the Okayama Railway Division (岡鉄).
It is one of the last official service watches of the Japanese State Railways before its privatization (1987) and was issued exclusively to train drivers and conductors.

Historical background

The following is engraved on the back of the case:
昭60 (Shōwa 60) = 1985
This clearly places this watch in the late JNR era, just two years before the dissolution of Japan National Railways.

The engraving岡鉄stands for “Okayama Tetsudō” – the Okayama Railway Division in western Japan.
Such service engravings were found exclusively on officially issued Seiko railway watches, which were produced according to precise specifications for railway personnel.

These pocket watches were subject to strict accuracy regulations and were regularly checked and adjusted by Seiko.

Description

An authentic historical document of Japanese railway history.
The clear dial with precise minute markings and classic Arabic numerals enabled precise time reading during train operation.
The robust stainless steel case and the precise Seiko quartz movement represent the high technical quality of the brand in the 1980s.

The engraving 昭60 (1985) and 岡鉄 (Okayama Division) clearly identifies this specimen as originating from a specific region – a rarity among collectors.

It is ideal as a collector's item or gift for railway and Japan enthusiasts – or as a symbolic birth year gift (1985).

Collector's value and significance

Late models with original JNR engraving are particularly sought after, as they document the last phase before the privatization of the Japanese railway.
They are considered technical and cultural cult objects of Japanese precision and industrial history.
