Rare and historically significant Seiko Railway Pocket Watch (鉄道時計) , made for the Japan National Railways (国鉄 – Kokutetsu) .
This watch was manufactured in the early 1980s for official use by the Shinkansen Division (新幹線) , the high-speed rail network of the Japanese State Railways.
It is one of the official, service-issued precision watches for train drivers and train attendants in high-speed rail operations.

Historical background

The following is engraved on the back of the case:
昭57 (Shōwa 57) = 1982
This specimen therefore dates from the time of the massive expansion of the Japanese Shinkansen network.

The engraving新幹(Q) stands for Shinkansen (Q) – a special allocation within the Japan National Railways that was responsible for the high-speed train operation of the Tōkaidō and Sanyō Shinkansen.
Only official service watches bore this engraving, which was intended to ensure precise time synchronization in railway operations.

These Seiko models have been regularly inspected, adjusted and certified to meet the high accuracy standards of high-speed transportation.
