Citizen Auto Dater Seven 25 Jewels – Ref. AW14701 – 40.1 mm Case – Day/Magnified Date - overhauled in Japan

A Japanese automatic watch from the mid-1960s with a case diameter of 40.1 millimeters – that is the real news about this watch. Those who like vintage but can't get along with the 34 to 36 millimeters of the era will find an exception here that still fits harmoniously on today's wrist.

The Auto-Dater-Seven Line

The Auto-Dater models represented Citizen's calendar versions of the automatic series; the Seven emblem with a crown in relief on the case back assigns the watch to the upscale Seven family. The 25-jewel version with a full day-date display is one of the better-equipped variants. The case reference is AW14701, and the watch can be dated to approximately 1965/66.

The dial inscription "para 40M water" stands for Citizen's Parawater cases, which were tested at 40 meters at the time – a historical manufacturer's specification for the new condition.

Design and Character

The light, warm-toned dial features applied, gold-colored baton indices and a fine printed minute track at the edge. The day display sits in its own framed window above the center of the dial, the date at 3 o'clock under a magnifying glass – a vertically staggered arrangement that is not constantly seen from Citizen and significantly improves legibility.

The dominant feature is the fluted coin-edge bezel, which gives the watch a distinguished appearance. Together with the gold-colored hands and the gold-plated case, this results in a cohesive, warm aesthetic.

The dimensions make the difference: 40.1 mm diameter without crown, 48.9 mm lug-to-lug, 13.3 mm height, and 20 mm lug width. This is a full-fledged men's case by today's standards – and at 71 grams, the watch feels substantial and high-quality on the wrist without being heavy. Strap changes are uncomplicated thanks to the common 20mm lug width.

Condition

The watch has been professionally serviced in Japan.

The case is in its original condition and has never been re-plated with gold. At both lugs, the gold plating has worn through to the base material; the affected areas are shown unretouched in the product photos. The condition of the gilding is agreed upon as described and pictured.

Re-gilding would be technically possible but would eliminate the originality of the case. We have deliberately decided against it and priced it accordingly.

The watch is supplied on a black leather strap.

Operating instructions: The quick-set for day and date should not be operated between 10 PM and 4 AM; set the hands to approximately 6 AM beforehand.
