Citizen Crystal Seven 33 Jewels – Ref. ACSS51401-Y – November 1967 – Original bracelet – freshly serviced

Thirty-three jewels. The number is printed on the dial directly below the Seven emblem, and it is the reason why this Crystal Seven stands out from the rest of the series: it is one of the higher-tier versions that Citizen offered in this line.

The Crystal Seven and the 33-jewel version

The "Seven" family was Citizen’s brand name in the 1960s for its better automatic movements; the crown featuring the number seven on the dial and case back serves as their hallmark. The Crystal Seven represented a combination of a high jewel count, day and date display, and the Parawater case – Citizen's in-house term for water-resistant construction.

Within this series, the 33-jewel version was one of the higher-quality tiers, though not the highest – Citizen also offered the Crystal Seven with up to 43 jewels, which is the rarest and most sought-after variant of the series. Between these, the program covered several tiers: 21, 23, 27, 30, 33, and 43 jewels. For comparison, the brand's standard, high-quality everyday automatics had 21 jewels. A higher jewel count means more friction points supported by bearings in the gear train and winding mechanism – an effort Citizen only made where the prestige of the watch justified it.

In addition to the Seven emblem, the case back bears the engraving PARAWATER · ACSS51401-Y · STAR · OR-D-1 · AUTOMATIC along with the serial number 71100474, which dates the watch to November 1967.

Serviced

The watch was professionally and completely serviced in Japan in the spring of 2026 and arrived with us in perfect working order.

Design and Character

The silver dial features a fine sunburst finish and shifts between a light silver and a warm champagne depending on the light. It is adorned with slim, applied, faceted baton indices that flash sharply in angled light. The day of the week is displayed in its own framed window above the center of the dial and is bilingual – a feature identifying the watch as a Japanese domestic model – while the date is positioned at 3 o'clock under a magnifier.

The stainless steel case measures 37.1 mm excluding the crown, with a 42.9 mm lug-to-lug distance and a height of 11.5 mm – a well-proportioned size that is ideal for everyday wear by today's standards. The watch comes on its original Citizen steel bracelet in a bead-link style, whose finely crafted round links conform softly to the wrist. With a sixty-year-old watch, a preserved original bracelet is far from a given – it brings the watch to 70 grams and gives it the cohesive appearance it was designed to have.

Condition

The watch is in good condition; the crystal and case show only minor signs of wear that are not distracting. The medallion on the case back is very well preserved. The crown is original and features the "C" logo.

Operating instructions: The quick-set function for the day and date should not be used between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.; please set the hands to approximately 6 o'clock beforehand.
