Citizen Forma – October 1986 - slim quartz dress watch, gold-tone – Caliber 4631

A flat Japanese dress watch from Citizen's Forma line, the program with which the manufacturer mass-produced simplified everyday watches in the 1980s: clear dials, low height, no embellishment.

The case back bears the engraving CITIZEN WATCH CO., the indication WATER RESIST 5BAR, the case reference 4631-E63051 TA, the case number 600301, and the identifiers GN-4-S, YP, and JAPAN. The dial is marked with CITIZEN and FORMA and bears the movement designation JAPAN 4630-E08391 KA at the bottom edge.

Forma – Citizen's Answer to Over-Equipping

In the early eighties, the Japanese watch market had spiraled into a function frenzy: alarm, chronograph, world time, radio reception. Citizen deliberately countered this with Forma — a line whose selling point was not what it could do additionally, but what it omitted.

The result was watches with easily readable Arabic numerals, thin hands, and a height that disappears under the cuff. For collectors today, they are interesting because they document a design approach that only became the majority opinion in Japanese watchmaking twenty years later.

Design

A white dial with a complete Arabic numeral ring from 1 to 12, with fine dotted minute markers in between. The CITIZEN lettering is below 12, FORMA above 6 — there is no more text.

The hands are slender and black, the second hand is a hairline. The round case with a polished bezel and short, boldly drawn lugs frames the dial tightly, making it appear larger than it is.

Please note: The case back engraving identifies the case with the identifier YP as non-ferrous metal with a yellow coating. This is a gold-colored coating, not gold.

Dating

The case number 600301 follows the Citizen system, where the first digit indicates the last digit of the year and the second digit indicates the month. The leading character of the second digit reads as the identifier for October. This results in October of a year ending in 6, most likely 1986 in conjunction with caliber 4631 and Forma affiliation. We provide this as a guide, not as a confirmed dating.

Condition and Origin

The watch comes from Japan and was inspected and fitted with a new battery before sale.

Dial and hands are flawless, the printing is complete and without defects. The crystal is clear. The gold-colored coating of the case is intact; slight polishing and handling marks are visible on the lugs and case back edge. The case back shows fine scratches, the engraving is fully legible.

The mounted gold-colored expansion bracelet is a replacement band and not original; it shows its own signs of wear on the upper surfaces of the links.
