This watch tells two stories. The first is technical: in the early 1960s, Citizen built an automatic movement that was unique in Japan. The second is personal, and it's literally written on the caseback – in Japanese, engraved, with a date and company name.

The Jet movement: Citizen's own path

While Seiko consistently focused on central oscillating weights, Citizen took a different approach in October 1961 and introduced the so-called Jet movement. Its special feature is a peripheral ring rotor: instead of an oscillating weight above the center of the movement, a narrow ring runs along a ball bearing track at the edge of the movement and engages with the winding gear via internal teeth. The FHF Fontomatic from 1959 served as a model.

The effect is twofold. Technically, the movement is flatter because no space is needed for an oscillating weight above the gear train level. Haptically, the winding feeling is incomparable to a conventional automatic – the ring runs with a peculiar, even smoothness. The second generation of movements, the 41xx series from 1964, operates at 18,000 vibrations per hour and offers quick date adjustment by repeatedly pulling the crown – far from standard in 1964.

Citizen returned to the conventional central oscillating weight after a few years, as it was cheaper to manufacture. The Jet movement is thus a closed technical chapter without modern successors – and precisely for this reason, it is interesting for collectors.

Two more Citizen terms are on the dial. "Parashock" refers to Citizen's shock protection for the balance staff, "Phynox" to the alloy of the mainspring – a cobalt-based, rust-free, and fatigue-resistant spring that Citizen introduced as an answer to the susceptibility of older carbon steel springs to breakage and featured on the dial as a quality mark from the late 1950s.

The engraving: Nippon Express, Shōwa 41

The caseback features a clear, deeply cut engraving:

永年勤続表彰 — 昭和41年 — 日本通運株式会社

Translated: "Award for Long Service — Shōwa 41 (1966) — Nippon Express Co., Ltd."

Nippon Express remains one of Japan's largest logistics companies. The watch was presented to an employee in 1966 for long-standing loyalty – a deeply rooted practice in Japan, where the watch was a token of recognition, not a piece of jewelry. This example is thus dated precisely to the year and documented in its origin, which is an absolute exception in this price range.

Design and Character

The dial is a bright sunburst dial, finely brushed and strictly structured: applied baton indexes, slender hands, central seconds hand, and a date window at 3 o'clock in a framed, slightly cushion-shaped design. The signature features the stylized Jet emblem above the "Citizen Jet / Auto Dater" lettering; below it, in fine script, "21 Jewels / Parashock phynox".

The polished stainless steel case is clean, with a narrow bezel and short, strong lugs. With a diameter of 37.1 mm, 45.1 mm lug-to-lug, and a height of 12.3 mm, the watch has a balanced, everyday-suitable stature; 48 grams make it one of the lighter automatic watches of its time. A utilitarian watch from the Japanese economic miracle, built for people who wore it every day – and it still wears exactly the same today.

Condition

The watch comes with a new black leather strap with a crocodile embossed pattern. The watch has been freshly serviced by a Japanese watchmaker.
