Citizen JR East "Series E3" Shinkansen Pocket Watch - Quartz - Ref. 6031-344022 - Vintage Japan

A Citizen pocket watch with a direct connection to one of the most distinctive Shinkansen trains of the JR East era.

This Citizen quartz pocket watch was designed as a railway collector's model for the JR East Series E3.

The dial features a detailed depiction of the E3 Shinkansen; the case back also carries the train motif along with the inscription

The E3 Series – Japan's second Mini-Shinkansen

The E3 Shinkansen debuted in March 1997 for the opening of the Akita Shinkansen.

Following the 400 series, it was the second generation of the so-called Mini-Shinkansen concept: the trains were designed to run on both regular Shinkansen lines and converted conventional railway lines.

To achieve this, the E3 trains had to be built slightly narrower than classic Shinkansen vehicles. Retractable steps, for example, compensated for the gap to the platforms on the actual Shinkansen lines.

On the high-speed network, the E3 series reached speeds of up to 275 km/h.

The series was initially developed for the Akita Shinkansen "Komachi." From 1999, E3-1000 trains were added in connection with the extension of the Yamagata Shinkansen to Shinjo; the E3-2000 series later followed as a replacement for the older 400 series.

Dating

An exact production date for this specific specimen is not possible based on the case back information currently visible.

However, what is certain is:

The E3 Shinkansen was not introduced until 1997. Therefore, the watch cannot have been made before 1997.

The Ref. 6031-344022 used was already in use for another special Shinkansen model in 1994. Together with the design and the E3 connection, this points to production likely in the late 1990s or early 2000s.

I would not claim a more precise year without an additional serial number or original documentation.

Design

The watch deliberately combines classic pocket watch aesthetics with modern Japanese railway technology.

The light-colored dial features Roman numeral indices, black Breguet-style or classically shaped hands, and a fine center-sweep second hand.

The technical motif of the E3 Shinkansen creates an interesting contrast to this.

The large stylized E3/railway symbol in the center is also part of the overall design.

The fluted bezel reinforces the traditional pocket watch character.

The back is designed in a much more modern style and shows the silhouette of the E3 as well as the JR East identification.
