Citizen Junior Pocket Watch – 15 Jewels – Parashock / Phynox – Manual Wind – Freshly Serviced

An elegant Citizen pocket watch from the early post-war period – and a fine example of the Japanese watch industry’s technical catch-up during the 1950s and early 1960s.

This Citizen Junior features a mechanical manual-wind movement with 15 jewels.

The dial also bears two inscriptions that are characteristic of Citizen's development during this era:

The Citizen Junior

Citizen introduced the Junior family in the late 1950s.

The models were intended to make solid mechanical watchmaking accessible at a broader price point. From today's perspective, this mid-range product class is particularly interesting: technically more sophisticated than simple utility movements, yet intentionally less luxurious than the brand's top models.

The pocket watch format used here is significantly rarer today than the well-known Junior wristwatches.

Para Shock – Japanese shock protection

Citizen introduced Para Shock in 1956.

The company describes the system as the first shock protection for wristwatches developed in Japan. For demonstration purposes, watches were even dropped from great heights at public events.

The inscription on the dial was, therefore, a genuine technical quality argument at the time.

Phynox

Phynox refers to a corrosion-resistant alloy used particularly for highly stressed spring elements in mechanical watch movements.

The combination of Para Shock and Phynox is exemplary of the attempt by Japanese manufacturers to make their mechanical movements more durable and suitable for everyday use.

Design

The dial is exceptionally elegant.

Slim applied gold-colored baton indices alternate with a double index at 12 o'clock. The long gold-colored hands and the fine central seconds hand harmonize with the silver-colored case.

With a diameter of 43.3 mm, the watch has classic pocket watch proportions.

The deliberately minimalist design makes it look considerably more modern than its actual age would suggest.

Condition and Servicing

The watch is in an attractive vintage condition.

The case and dial show slight signs of wear consistent with age; overall, the piece presents itself in a highly harmonious manner for its age.

The watch has been freshly serviced / completely overhauled.

Therefore, this is not an unchecked old pocket watch, but a mechanically refurbished vintage watch.
