This elegant Grand Seiko Hi-Beat automatic watch dates from July 1971 and was manufactured in the renowned Suwa Seikosha factory . It belongs to the famous 56GS series , which was produced from 1968 to 1974 and marked the transition from classic hand-wound Grand Seikos to modern, automatic precision models.
Background and historical significanceThe 56GS series replaced the previous 45GS and 61GS lines and introduced, for the first time, an automatic Hi-Beat caliber with 28,800 vibrations per hour to the Grand Seiko family. The aim was to combine the highest precision with everyday-use automatic technology – a direct response to competition from Swiss chronometers and the growing popularity of automatic luxury watches.
The caliber 5646A used in this watch is a fine, hand-regulated movement with a date and day display (bilingual), featuring the finely polished movement surface typical of Grand Seiko at the time and micrometric regulator adjustment. It was manufactured in the Suwa movement, which was responsible for the majority of Grand Seiko models during this era.
Design and detailsThe Ref. 5646-7010 exemplifies the “Grammar of Design” concept developed by Seiko’s legendary designer Taro Tanaka : clear geometries, sharp edges and perfectly polished surfaces that reflect light precisely.
The silver sunburst dial features slim, highly polished hour markers and the classic "GS" inscription above the "Hi-Beat" emblem. The original crown with the GS logo is present – an important collector's item. The gold-plated GS medallion on the case back is also very well preserved and shows only minor signs of age.
The watch is worn on a new black leather strap, which emphasizes the elegant character of the watch.
