HIROTA URUSHI – Japanese lacquer art in its most exquisite form
The Hirota Urushi fountain pen – Kushime Tsuishitsu Nuri – Kiniro I is a handcrafted, one-of-a-kind piece from the workshop of master Yoko Hirota (廣田洋子) – one of the few Japanese artists who have been working in the tradition of Japanese Urushi lacquer for over 30 years. Each pen is individually crafted and requires months or even years to produce. No two pens are exactly alike – each one is unique.

Hirota's works are strictly limited and meticulously handcrafted. Many of her fountain pens are produced in editions of only 1 to 3 pieces – true collector's items with soul.
The model shown here uses the technique櫛目堆漆塗 (Kushime Tsuishitsu Nuri) , in which fine structures are worked into several layers of urushi lacquer using a comb. The result: a fascinating surface appearance with depth, texture, and a golden shimmer – classically Japanese, minimalist, and timelessly beautiful.
Important NOTE:
Since each piece is handmade, the delivered model may vary slightly in color and pattern from the product photo. If you appreciate handcrafted uniqueness, you will love this writing instrument.
