JAPAN VINTAGE SEIKO – The new standard reference by BQ – Book – Limited hardcover edition
JAPAN VINTAGE SEIKO – The new standard reference by BQ – Book – Limited hardcover edition
There are books that inform. And there are books that have a lasting impact on an entire collecting category. JAPAN VINTAGE SEIKO undoubtedly belongs to the latter category.
This extraordinary work marks the first comprehensive, systematically structured catalog of Seiko wristwatches from the 1950s to the 1990s. For collectors of Japanese watches, this is likely to be one of the most important new releases in recent years.
Responsible for the project is Yoshihiko Honda, known in the Japanese watch scene for decades by his moniker "BQ". As one of the most renowned researchers and chroniclers of the Japanese watch industry, he has been involved for many years in documenting historical Seiko models. His works and columns in the specialist magazine LowBEAT enjoy an excellent reputation among collectors.
The volume is published by C’s Factory in collaboration with the editorial team of LowBEAT.
Why this book is special
The significance of this work only becomes apparent upon closer inspection.
While extensive standard works have existed for many Swiss manufacturers for decades, a comparable systematic documentation of historical Seiko production has been lacking until now. Although excellent specialized publications on individual model series or eras have appeared repeatedly in Japan, a work of this scope and chronological breadth has not existed until now.
JAPAN VINTAGE SEIKO pursues a significantly more ambitious approach. The volume documents the brand's development from the early post-war years to the 1990s, tracing the path from the first post-war models through Crown, Cronos, Skyliner, and Lord Marvel to King Seiko, Grand Seiko, Lord Matic, and the groundbreaking quartz watches of later decades.
It's not just about the well-known classics. Special attention is paid to rare variants, poorly documented references, and models that are rarely found even on the Japanese market. Especially for collectors who intensively study reference numbers, dial variations, case shapes, and caliber developments, this book will quickly become an indispensable reference work.
Over 700 newly photographed watches
For the creation of the volume, more than 700 watches were specially re-photographed over a period of almost a year.
The publishers do not limit themselves to archive material or previously known catalog images. Instead, numerous examples were re-photographed to document differences between variants and versions as precisely as possible.
The result is far more than a picture book. JAPAN VINTAGE SEIKO sees itself as a reference work intended to aid in the identification, classification, and evaluation of historical Seiko watches.
Excellent for European collectors as well
Particularly gratifying is the publishers' decision to publish the entire work bilingually in Japanese and English.
Many of the most important Japanese watch publications remain only partially accessible to an international audience due to the language barrier. JAPAN VINTAGE SEIKO breaks this barrier and makes BQ's decades of research accessible to a broader international collecting community for the first time.
We had the opportunity to accompany the English version in advance, and we are therefore particularly pleased to be able to offer this work to collectors in Germany as well.

A rare opportunity
Connoisseurs of the Japanese watch scene know that high-quality specialized publications from small Japanese publishers often appear in comparatively small print runs. In particular, publications from the LowBEAT and C’s Factory environment are often difficult to obtain after they sell out.
Not a few titles are traded years later on the Japanese used market at prices significantly higher than the original issue price. Whether this trend will repeat itself with JAPAN VINTAGE SEIKO remains to be seen, of course. However, experience shows that comprehensive reference works of this quality rarely appear and often remain the authoritative literature in their field for many years.
