JAPAN VINTAGE SEIKO – The new standard work by BQ – Book – Standard Hardcover

JAPAN VINTAGE SEIKO – The new standard work by BQ – Book – Standard Hardcover

There are books that inform. And there are books that sustainably shape an entire collector's category. JAPAN VINTAGE SEIKO undoubtedly belongs to the second category.

With this exceptional work, a comprehensive, systematically structured catalog of Seiko wristwatches from the 1950s to the 1990s is published for the first time. For collectors of Japanese watches, this is likely one of the most important new releases in recent years.

Responsible for the project is Yoshihiko Honda, known in the Japanese watch scene for decades by his abbreviation "BQ". As one of the most renowned researchers and chroniclers of the Japanese watch industry, he has been involved in documenting historical Seiko models for many years. His works and columns in the specialist magazine LowBEAT enjoy an excellent reputation among collectors.

The volume is published by C’s Factory in cooperation with the editorial team of LowBEAT.

Why this book is special

The significance of this work only becomes apparent at second glance.

While extensive standard works have existed for many Swiss manufacturers for decades, a comparable systematic documentation of historical Seiko production has been lacking until now. Although excellent specialized publications on individual model series or eras have repeatedly appeared in Japan, a work of this scope and temporal breadth did not exist until now.

JAPAN VINTAGE SEIKO pursues a significantly more ambitious approach. The volume documents the brand's development from the early post-war years to the 1990s, tracing the path from the first post-war models through Crown, Cronos, Skyliner, and Lord Marvel to King Seiko, Grand Seiko, Lord Matic, and the groundbreaking quartz watches of later decades.

It's not just about the well-known classics. Special attention is paid to rare variants, poorly documented references, and models that are rarely found even on the Japanese market. Especially for collectors who intensively deal with reference numbers, dial variants, case shapes, and caliber developments, this book will quickly become an indispensable reference work.

Over 700 newly photographed watches

For the creation of the volume, more than 700 watches were specially re-photographed over a period of almost a year.

The editors do not limit themselves to archive material or already known catalog illustrations. Rather, numerous examples were re-photographed to document differences between variants and versions as precisely as possible.

The result is far more than a picture book. JAPAN VINTAGE SEIKO sees itself as a reference work intended to help identify, classify, and evaluate historical Seiko watches.

Excellent for European collectors as well

Particularly pleasing is the editors' decision to publish the entire work bilingually in Japanese and English.

Many of the most important Japanese watch publications remain only partially accessible to an international audience due to the language barrier. JAPAN VINTAGE SEIKO breaks this barrier and makes BQ's decades of research accessible to a wider international circle of collectors for the first time.

We had the opportunity to accompany the English version in advance, and are therefore particularly pleased to be able to offer this work to collectors in Germany as well.

A rare opportunity

Experts in the Japanese watch scene know that high-quality specialized publications from small Japanese publishers often appear only in relatively small editions. In particular, publications from the environment of LowBEAT and C’s Factory are often difficult to obtain once they are sold out.

Not a few titles are traded on the Japanese used market years later at prices significantly higher than the original issue price. Whether this development will repeat itself with JAPAN VINTAGE SEIKO remains to be seen, of course. Experience shows, however, that comprehensive reference works of this quality rarely appear and often remain the authoritative literature in their field for many years.

Anyone seriously interested in the history of Seiko or collecting vintage Seiko watches themselves should not miss this publication. In our estimation, the book has the potential to establish itself in the coming years as one of the most important reference works on historical Seiko production.
