Kuretake Kindai Maki-e - Fan Red

Kuretake Kindai Maki-e - Fan Red

In this collection, Wancher and Kuretake combine the modern Kindai-Maki-e technique with classic Japanese symbols, cultural motifs, and folklore. The result is 18 unique designs that merge traditional art with contemporary precision.

To complete the fine craftsmanship of the Kuretake artists, Wancher adds the nib and clip to each model – as an expression of shared passion and as a carrier of the stories these fountain pens tell. With sincere dedication, we present the Maki-e Monogatari Collection: Japanese design, traditional technique, and modern everyday usability – for writing, collecting, or gifting.

Kindai Maki-e & Ukiyo-e – Technique & Inspiration

Kindai Maki-e is inspired by the aesthetics of classical Ukiyo-e, a historical Japanese printing technique where motifs are transferred onto wood or paper using stencils. Both art forms share the principle of permanently applying an image to a surface.

Ukiyo-e even influenced European artists in the 19th century – including the Impressionist Vincent van Gogh. This connection of tradition, craftsmanship, and cultural impact is reflected in every Maki-e Monogatari fountain pen.

Design – Nature Motifs in Japanese Art

The design is based on the Rimpa school of the 17th century, which continues to influence numerous works of art today. Typical elements include natural motifs such as flowers, trees, mountains, and animals – motifs deeply rooted in Japanese painting tradition.

For final protection, each design is sealed with clear Urushi lacquer, which provides depth, gloss, and durability.

The Maki-e Monogatari Fountain Pen – Manufacturing

The body of the fountain pen is surprisingly lightweight yet robust. The seamless casing allows the Maki-e drawing to be displayed without interruption.

The body is made from a single piece of aluminum, precisely shaped using the press-drawing process. This technique requires strength, finesse, and experience – and ensures a durable, perfectly balanced writing instrument.

The barrel and cap are created by the controlled deep drawing of the metal – a labor-intensive process that makes the modern interpretation of Maki-e possible.

Shape & Handling

The bullet-shaped silhouette fits comfortably in the hand, is compact and ideal for daily use. The M nib size offers a versatile, balanced writing style. Compatible with all Kuretake nibs.
