Kuretake Kindai Maki-e - Auspicious Phoenix Black

Kuretake Kindai Maki-e - Auspicious Phoenix Black

Wancher and Kuretake unite in this special collection, combining the modern Kindai-Maki-e technique with Japanese symbols, cultural motifs, and folklore. The result is 18 elaborate designs that blend traditional aesthetics with contemporary precision – created for individuals who see writing as an expression of personality and culture.

To perfect the fine craftsmanship of Kuretake's artists, Wancher complements each model with a nib and clip. This creates a fountain pen that not only writes but tells a story – passionately crafted, presented with sincere dedication. The Maki-e Monogatari collection is suitable for both daily use and as a special gift.

Kindai Maki-e & Ukiyo-e – Inspiration & Technique

The Kindai-Maki-e technique is based on the aesthetics of classical Ukiyo-e, a traditional Japanese printmaking art. Ukiyo-e uses stencils and color printing on wood or paper – a process similar to the principle of Kindai Maki-e: to permanently and artfully apply an image to a surface.

This technique even influenced European artists such as Vincent van Gogh in the 19th century. The combination of tradition, craftsmanship, and cultural impact is reflected in each individual fountain pen in this collection.

Design – Nature motifs in Japanese art

The design of the Maki-e Monogatari models is inspired by the 17th-century Rimpa school, whose style continues to influence numerous artworks today. Typical elements include natural motifs such as flowers, trees, mountains, and animals – motifs deeply rooted in Japanese painting tradition.

For added protection and depth, each design is finally sealed with clear Urushi lacquer.

The Maki-e Monogatari Fountain Pen – Manufacturing

The fountain pen features a surprisingly light, slender, yet robust body. The seamless casing allows the Maki-e drawing to stand out without interruption.

The barrel is crafted from a single piece of aluminum, precisely shaped using the press drawing method. This technique requires experience, sensitivity, and strength – ensuring a durable, perfectly balanced writing instrument.

The barrel and cap are created through controlled deep drawing of the metal – a labor-intensive process that enables the modern interpretation of Maki-e.

Shape & Handling

The bullet-shaped silhouette feels comfortable in the hand, is compact, and ideal for daily use. The nib size M offers versatile writing styles. Compatible with all Kuretake nibs.
