Historical background – The Orient in the 1970s
In the 1960s and 70s, Orient was one of the three major Japanese manufacturers of mechanical watches, alongside Seiko and Citizen. They focused more on distinctive designs, sunburst dials, and robust construction for everyday wear. The 21-jewel automatic movements of this generation are known for their durability and ease of servicing, and millions were exported – making Orient particularly popular in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
This model, with its cushion-shaped case and two-tone dial, is typical of the design phase of the late 1970s.
