Orient

Orient is one of the three major Japanese watch manufacturers and has always been a brand for mechanical watches with its own distinct character. While Seiko and Citizen maintain broad product lines, Orient has consistently allowed itself designs that would never have made it past the committees elsewhere—unusual case shapes, bold colors, and unconventional display principles. Since 2017, Orient has been fully owned by Seiko Epson and continues to manufacture in-house automatic movements to this day.

Design and Character

The dial is rendered in a deep, rich green that shifts between bottle green and emerald in the light. Time is displayed not through traditional hands, but via rotating discs with numbers that appear in an arched aperture—a display principle developed in the 1970s as a counter-design to the conventional watch, and which is read today as an immediate design statement. It is complemented by a red-tipped hand and a surrounding scale that give the dial a technical, instrumental aesthetic.

The rectangular case measures 35.8 × 40.7 mm with a height of 14 mm—a watch with presence that also feels substantial on the wrist at 82 grams. The 28 mm lug width is remarkable: it is unusually wide and contributes significantly to the watch’s cohesive, "one-piece" appearance. However, replacement straps in this width are not easy to find—a detail we prefer to mention beforehand.

Condition

The watch is running. The dial is well-preserved; the case and crystal show signs of wear. The included original brown leather strap has been carefully cleaned and disinfected.
