Orient Star Automatic GMT – black ion-plated, power reserve and second time zone – exhibition case back

The high-end range from the third major Japanese watchmaker: an Orient Star with an in-house automatic movement, second time zone, power reserve indicator, and date, in a black ion-plated stainless steel case.

The exhibition case back bears the engravings ORIENT WATCH CO., ST. STEEL, W.R. 10BAR, as well as the identification IA2. The case reference is DJ00-00-B CA (model series WZ0071DJ). The dial is marked with ORIENT STAR, AUTOMATIC, and GMT.

Orient Star – the line that Orient owed to itself

Orient is the smallest of the three Japanese houses with its own movement production and was long perceived in Europe as a manufacturer of affordable automatic watches. Orient Star is the response: a line in which the house shows what it is capable of when cost-cutting is not the primary objective.

The GMT models are at the pinnacle of this. An automatic movement with an independently adjustable second time zone is complex to engineer; the additional power reserve indicator requires an extra gear train. The fact that Orient incorporated both into its own caliber instead of buying them externally is the real point of this watch.

It was sold primarily in the Japanese domestic market. In Europe, Orient Star remains a niche phenomenon to this day – which is the more interesting part of the story for buyers looking for an automatic complication at this price point.

Design

A black dial on which three layers of information are superimposed without interfering with one another. On the outside, a 24-hour scale for the second time zone runs along the inclined rehaut, read via the red arrow hand. Below this are applied indices coated with luminous material.

At twelve o'clock, a sector indicates the power reserve; at three o'clock, the date window sits under a magnifier. In the lower half of the dial, you will find the Orient Star lettering with the curved logo, as well as the terms AUTOMATIC and GMT, the latter in red.

The case is fully black ion-plated, with faceted flanks and two crowns – the lower one for setting the time zone. The screwed-down exhibition case back allows a view of the rotor with Orient Star engraving and the perlage-finished bridges.

Dating

An individual serial number is not legible. The model series, caliber family, and case design point to production in the 2010s. We provide this as an indication, not as a verified date.

Condition and provenance

The watch comes from a Japanese specialty watch store and was inspected there before sale.

The dial, hands, and crystal are flawless. The black coating on the case is intact; slight signs of handling are visible on the edges and the bezel, as is inevitable with coated cases. Both crowns operate smoothly, and the exhibition back is clear. The movement is running.

The black polyurethane strap has been newly fitted.
