Behind OUTLINE is Yoshimasa Kikuchi – editor of Japan's seminal watch magazines like Power Watch, LOW BEAT, and TIME Gear. For decades, he has followed, tested, and described the world of watches – until he decided to realize his own idea of vintage-inspired toolwatches. OUTLINE embodies the spirit of the 1940s to 1960s: authentic in proportions, meticulously detailed in execution, and made for everyday wear.
The 369 Special is the brand's flagship, reinterpreting a classic Explorer design motif with the Arabic numerals 3-6-9. What makes this version special: the brown "Tropical" dial. In the vintage world, "Tropical" refers to those extremely rare dials where an originally black tone uniformly fades to a warm brownish over decades – a look that is legendary on early Explorer watches and today is only found truly beautifully preserved in exceptional cases. OUTLINE has reinterpreted exactly this ideal shade of brown, based on examples from the collector's scene.
Added to this is the characteristic honeycomb pattern, which gives the brown a special depth: not smooth and flat, but with a fine texture that gently refracts the light and emphasizes the vintage character even more. Also new is the bezel: now high-gloss polished instead of satin-finished – an exciting contrast to the matte dial texture and a touch more luxury, without losing the toolwatch character.
Inside, the Miyota 9039, the top caliber of Citizen/Miyota's 9000 series, is at work: high-beat with 28,800 vibrations per hour, reliable, slim-built, and with a hacking seconds function – perfect for enabling the slim case concept of this watch. The package is rounded off by the popular 1950s-style rivet bracelet and the practical travel case that you'll actually use, rather than just keeping it in a drawer.
