Rarity: Seiko Braille Watch Ref. 6618-6000 (November 1975) – NOS with Original Price Tag

This Seiko Braille watch Ref. 6618-6000 is more than just an ordinary vintage timepiece – it is a piece of lived Japanese social history and an impressive testament to the fact that Seiko's claim to "functional beauty" was never just aesthetically motivated. Already in the first half of the 1960s, Seiko – then the undisputed technological leader in Japan – began, as one of the very few manufacturers worldwide, specifically developing wristwatches for the visually impaired and blind. What Swiss manufacturers like Omega or Tissot offered in isolated special models, Seiko pursued as a continuous product line for almost two decades. These so-called "Tactile Watches" combined technical precision with a strong concept of inclusion and today symbolize Japan's humanistic engineering understanding at the peak of its economic miracle.

The functional principle of this watch is as simple as it is ingenious: the entire crystal, including the bezel, is attached to the case as a hinged lid with a sturdy hinge. By gently lifting the bail, the lid opens upwards like an old hunter-case pocket watch, and the wearer can feel the hour and minute hands as well as the raised indices with their fingertip – without damaging the crystal or bending the delicate hands of a normal watch. Precisely for this purpose, Seiko constructed the watch to be exceptionally robust in every respect: the hands are significantly thicker than on a regular watch, screwed in the center (not just pressed on), and dimensioned to withstand continuous tactile stress. A second hand was deliberately omitted to keep the tactile surface as clear and uncluttered as possible.

Inside, the in-house caliber 6618A works – a manual-winding movement with 17 jewels and 18,000 vibrations per hour, which throughout Seiko's history was exclusively used for the Braille watch models of references 6618-6000 and later 6618-8001. The choice of a manual movement was no coincidence: through daily winding, the wearer receives clear haptic feedback on the tension of the spring – an automatic caliber would have withheld this information. Even the later introduction of the early quartz movement 7518 for a successor generation could not replace the mechanical solution for a long time, because the first quartz calibers simply did not provide enough torque to reliably move the heavy, tactilely robust hands. Precisely for this reason, the 6618A remained in the Seiko JDM catalog for an exceptionally long time – from November 1966 to approximately 1980, a remarkable lifespan for a single special caliber.

The Ref. 6618-6000 offered here is the smaller and rarer variant of the series (the later Ref. 6618-8001 was significantly larger at approx. 35.5 × 40 mm) and corresponds in proportions to a classic ladies' or unisex size of the 1960s and 1970s. The stainless steel case shows a slender, rectilinear design with polished lugs, and the characteristic linen-pattern dial in a warm silver tone also offers a subtle elegance visually. The hinged construction fits precisely and snaps back into the closed position with the typical, satisfying click. On the case back, the typical Seiko markings "SEIKO STAINLESS STEEL 6618-6000", the movement number 5N5291, and the note "JAPAN A" can be found.

The production date can be precisely determined from the serial number: the leading "5" stands for a year ending in 5, the "N" for the month of November. Since the caliber 6618A was demonstrably only produced from November 1966 onwards, only November 1975 is possible – the watch thus comes from the late, mature phase of this remarkable model series.

This example is in an exceptionally well-preserved, almost new condition for a 50-year-old piece and has been professionally checked and serviced by a Japanese watchmaker. A special rarity: the original blue Seiko price tag with the original JDM sales price of ¥6,000 (Code T G05B) is still untouched on the strap – an authentic proof that the watch was hardly or not worn at all at the time. The original Seiko pin buckle is also preserved. Only the original leather strap has been replaced with a suitable vintage leather strap in a stylish black.

Due to its low production numbers, its special socio-historical and technological significance, and especially its exceptionally preserved original condition including the price tag, this watch is one of the most sought-after and rarest Seiko collector's items of the period. It is equally suitable for collectors of Seiko special calibers, for lovers of technological curiosities, and for wearers who want to wear a watch with real history on their wrist.
