Ricoh Quartz Pocket Watch – Ref. J-272-48-01 – gold-colored – Chain

A Japanese quartz pocket watch from Ricoh's lesser-known watchmaking history.

Today, Ricoh is primarily associated with cameras, printers, and precision optical and electronic engineering. However, for several decades, Ricoh was also an independent watch manufacturer.

This compact gold-tone pocket watch comes from this now largely forgotten side of the brand.

From Takano to Ricoh

Ricoh's watchmaking history is directly linked to Takano Seimitsu Kogyo.

Takano began producing its own wristwatches in 1957. In 1962, the company was acquired by the San-Ai Group, which was led by Riken Optical – the later Ricoh. From this technical foundation, Ricoh subsequently developed its own extensive watch production.

The mechanical Ricoh Dynamic and Dynamic Wide models, in particular, are among the better-known areas for collectors within this history today. Later, however, Ricoh also produced electronic and quartz watches.

Traditional design, modern technology

This Ref. J-272-48-01 combines an almost classic pocket watch design with an electronic quartz movement.

It represents a typical Japanese transitional phenomenon: traditional case shapes were not abandoned even after the quartz revolution, but instead combined with modern drive technology.

The practical advantage is obvious: a pocket watch with a classic appearance that does not need to be wound daily.

Design

The gold-tone case features a wide, polished bezel.

The light-colored dial is equipped with elegant Arabic numerals and is reminiscent of classic pocket watches from the first half of the 20th century rather than a typical modern quartz watch.

The black hands provide a clear contrast.

The scope of delivery includes a gold-tone metal chain with a clip.

Condition

The watch shows visible signs of wear and minor scratches on the case and case back.

The dial is in good condition overall.

According to the Japanese seller, the watch is running; the movement was checked prior to sale. A more recent comprehensive overhaul or service is not documented.
