The Ricoh Riquartz A570-65 combines the engineering culture of the 1970s with a clear, functional design that is now one of the characteristic features of classic Japanese quartz watches.
The model offers an exciting insight into Japan's early quartz era , in which brands like Ricoh, Seiko and Citizen revolutionized the international market.
Background on the Ricoh Watch / Riquartz brand
The Japanese brand Ricoh – now known worldwide for cameras, copiers and electronics – also played a significant role in watchmaking in the 1960s and 1970s.
The company's watch division, Ricoh Watch Co., Ltd. , was founded in 1962 and produced both mechanical and electromechanical watches, and later quartz watches .
In the early 1970s, Ricoh, together with Citizen and Seiko, developed the first prototypes of quartz-controlled watch movements, before introducing the independent “Riquartz” line in 1974 – named as a combination of Ricoh and Quartz .
These watches were known for their reliability, durability and precise timekeeping , and were aimed at the tech-savvy Japanese market of the early digitization era.
The Riquartz series focused on simple, functional design: clear dials, applied indices and understated case shapes that emphasized technological progress without appearing fashionable.
Technically, Ricoh relied on its own caliber developments, which were considered very robust at the time and were often used in OEM productions.
From the 1980s onwards, Ricoh gradually withdrew from watch production to focus more on the electronics and imaging sector.
Today, Riquartz models are considered authentic witnesses to the Japanese quartz revolution – they combine industrial simplicity with the precision and innovative power that made Japan's watchmaking world-famous.
