Seiko 5 DX 6106-7000 – April 1977 – Automatic with Day/Date – Serviced in Japan early 2026

The Seiko 5 is the best-selling mechanical watch family in the world – and the DX version was what would today be called the premium variant within that family. This particular model, with its Caliber 6106, has been expertly serviced in Japan.

Seiko 5 and the DX variant

From 1963 onwards, the Seiko 5 stood for a clearly defined promise: automatic winding, day and date display, shock resistance, a waterproof case, and a durable winding mechanism – five features that gave the line its name. The idea behind it was a robust everyday watch for everyone, and it was so successful that the line still exists today.

Within this family, the DX designation marked the more upscale version with more elaborate dials and cases. The Caliber 6106 built into this model is an automatic movement with day and date display, which Seiko produced in large quantities and with corresponding maturity over the years – one of the reasons why so many of these watches are still running today.

The case back bears the engraving SEIKO · WATER PROOF · SG BACK · ST. STEEL · 6106-7000 as well as the serial number 7401528, which according to the Seiko system dates it to April 1977.

Serviced

The watch was professionally serviced in Japan at the beginning of 2026. For an automatic watch of this age, that's the difference between a watch you can wear and one you have to take to the watchmaker first.

Design and Character

The champagne-colored dial is finely satin-finished and features applied, faceted bar indices that shimmer sharply in the light. At 3 o'clock is the combined day-date window, and at 12 o'clock the lettering with the DX emblem. The gold-colored bezel frames the dial and gives the watch a warmer, more formal appearance than one is used to from the Seiko 5.

The case measures 35.3 mm without crown, with 39.4 mm lug-to-lug and 11.2 mm height – compact, classic proportions that work on almost any wrist. At 45 grams on the new dark green leather strap, the watch is exceptionally light. The choice of strap color is deliberate: dark green picks up the warm gold tone of the case without doubling it.

Condition

The watch is in an honest used condition. The gold plating is rubbed in some places, but the dial is clean, and technically the watch is in excellent condition.

Operating note: The quick-set adjustment for day and date should not be operated at night while the shifting mechanism is engaged; set the hands to approximately 6 o'clock beforehand.
