Seiko 5 Sports 6106-8120 – Caliber 6106, Suwa Seikosha – rotating bezel, "Water 70 Proof" – September 1968 – freshly serviced

A rotating bezel, a dark dial, seventy meters of water resistance, and an automatic movement with day and date.

In 1968, this was a remarkable set of features for a watch from the lower third of the Seiko lineup—and the reason the Seiko 5 Sports became the utilitarian watch of an entire generation in Japan.

What the five means

Seiko introduced the Seiko 5 in 1963, and the digit was not a model number, but a promise—five features that every watch in the series had to fulfill:

1. Automatic winding
2. Day and date display in a single window
3. Water resistance
4. Recessed crown at four o'clock
5. Durable case and movement

The fourth point is the one you feel on your wrist. The crown is not located at three o'clock, where it would dig into the back of your hand with every movement, but is recessed at four o'clock. You simply don't notice it anymore—and because it lies deeper in the case, it is better protected against impacts and water ingress.

Within the series, the Sports versions stood for more robust cases and higher water resistance. Here, it is 70 meters, marked on the dial as "WATER 70 PROOF" and on the case back as "WATER PROOF."

The rotating bezel

Unlike most Seiko 5 models, this one features an external rotating bezel with a black insert, a 60-minute scale, and a luminous marker at twelve o'clock.

The benefit is immediate: you set the marker to the minute hand and read off the elapsed time—for dives, parking meters, cooking times, or meetings. It is the simplest auxiliary function a watch can have, and by far the most frequently used.

Together with the cushion-shaped case and the 70 meters of resistance, this bezel gives the watch the appearance of a diver's watch, even though Seiko did not market it as one. It is precisely this borderline status that makes the Sports models interesting today: they have the look of the tool watches of those years, without their price tag.

Suwa and Daini

The caliber 6106 originates from the Suwa factory, recognizable by the small whirlpool logo on the dial and case back.

For decades, Seiko maintained two completely separate production facilities that competed with each other: Suwa Seikosha in Nagano and Daini Seikosha in Tokyo. Suwa developed the Grand Seiko; Daini, the King Seiko. What is rarely mentioned is that the same engineers who worked on the top models also designed the mass-market calibers. The manufacturing discipline required for a Grand Seiko directly benefited the simpler watches.

This is precisely the reason why a Seiko 5 from 1968 runs reliably again today after a service, while many European watches in the same price range have long since disappeared.

The caliber 6106

Regarding operation: The 6106 cannot be hand-wound and does not have a hacking function (seconds stop). If the watch has been sitting, you start it by gently swaying it; it will start running after a few seconds. This is not a defect, but a design feature of the series—Seiko deliberately omitted these functions in the Seiko 5 to make the movements simpler and more durable.

As with all Seiko movements of this type, the calendar should not be adjusted between approximately 9 p.m. and 3 a.m., as the switching mechanism is already engaged during this period.

Dial and case

The dial is finished in a dark anthracite gray that lightens noticeably toward the center and shifts between graphite and almost black depending on the light. It is surrounded by a raised, silver-colored ring with a printed minute track—a stepped construction that gives the watch depth and significantly improves legibility.

The hour markers are applied, luminous-coated batons; at twelve o'clock, there is a wider double index. Additionally, there are hands with luminous channels and a red center seconds hand as the only color accent besides the blue SPORTS lettering.

The dial is inscribed with the SEIKO logo and the 5 shield, below which are SPORTS / WATER 70 PROOF / 25 JEWELS as well as the Suwa symbol.

The stainless steel case is cushion-shaped with lugs that sweep outward. With a diameter of 39.1 mm, a lug-to-lug distance of 42.8 mm, and a height of 11.9 mm, it is sportily proportioned but remains easy to handle on the wrist thanks to the short lugs.

Condition

Technically flawless. The watch was professionally serviced in Japan in the spring/summer of 2026—fully disassembled, cleaned, oiled, and regulated. The automatic winding, the quickset for day and date, and the rotating bezel all function perfectly.

The dial is well preserved: the anthracite-colored surface is uniform, the lettering is complete and sharp, the applied indices are firm, the silver ring is undamaged, and the calendar frame is intact.

The luminous material in the indices, hands, and the bezel marker has darkened to a warm cream tone due to age and no longer glows. This is typical for watches of this era.

The stainless steel case shows age-appropriate signs of wear on the bezel, edges, and flanks; the black bezel insert shows scattered marks, but the lettering is fully legible. The case back bears scratches from opening and wearing; all engravings—reference 6106-8120, serial number, Suwa symbol—are complete and clearly legible. The mineral crystal is clear and free of damage.

It is mounted on a third-party stainless steel bracelet; this is not the original Seiko band.

The gray dial distinguishes it from the common black versions and looks significantly more vibrant in the light.

For those starting a mechanical Seiko collection: it contains the same movement from the same Suwa production as the significantly more expensive Lord Matic, in a case that you can wear rather than pamper.

And for anyone looking for a watch with a function they actually use. A rotating bezel needs no explanation—you set it to the minute hand and you know where you stand.
