Seiko AGS Titanium Scuba 200 m – Ref. 5M43-0B70 – April 1996 – freshly serviced

A diver's watch that requires neither battery nor winding: the rotor generates electricity, a capacitor stores it, and a quartz movement regulates the time. Seiko called this system AGS – and the titanium version with 200 meters of water resistance is the most consistent application the series has found.

The case back is embossed with SEIKO TITANIUM, AIR DIVER'S 200m, reference 5M43-0B70, JAPAN J, and serial number 648060, and bears the Tsunami medallion that Seiko uses to identify its diver's watches.

AGS – Automatic Generating System

Seiko introduced the AGS in 1988. The idea solves the central annoyance of quartz watches: a rotor, like in an automatic watch, drives a micro-generator, the electricity generated charges a storage cell, and the quartz movement draws its energy from this. The watch thus needs no battery – only movement.

The AGS later evolved into the Kinetic line, under which Seiko continues to market the system today. The early AGS models are more interesting for collectors because they document the initial phase of the technology and because Seiko used them in the most demanding category: as diver's watches.

This version combines the 5M43 caliber with a titanium case and 200 meters of water resistance according to diver's watch standards. At 12 o'clock, there is a power reserve indicator that is activated by a pusher – the seconds hand then jumps to the reserve scale and shows how much the storage cell is charged.

Design

The dial is deep black with a fine-grained, slightly matte surface that breaks reflections. Large, round luminous dots and wide bar indices are located at 6, 9, and 12 o'clock – legibility takes precedence over everything else here.

The hands are robustly dimensioned and fully covered with luminous material; the seconds hand is slender and white. At 3 o'clock, there is a framed double window for day and date, with the day of the week in two languages. The scales for power reserve and charge status are located at the top and bottom edges of the dial.

The titanium case is matte brushed and appears significantly lighter and warmer than stainless steel; with a diameter of 39.1 millimeters, the watch, including the titanium band, weighs only 85 grams. The unidirectional rotating diver's bezel has a strongly shaped toothing and clicks in minute increments. The watch is delivered with the original titanium bracelet with a signed folding clasp.

Dating

The serial number 648060 dates the watch to April 1996 according to the usual Seiko system. The first digit indicates the year, the second the month. This corresponds to the known production period of the 5M43 caliber.

Condition and Overhaul

The watch was overhauled in Japan by a watchmaker in February 2026.

The dial is flawless: no moisture damage, no stains, the luminous dots are complete and evenly preserved. The hands are undamaged, day and date are neatly in the window, and the power reserve indicator works.

The glass is clear. The bezel shows significant signs of wear: there are several scratches on the scale surface, and abrasion is visible on the toothing. The titanium case has the fine scratches typical for this material, which are more pronounced on the matte surface than on polished steel. The titanium bracelet is complete and shows signs of wear on the links; the signed folding clasp closes securely. The crown and pushers operate smoothly, and the bezel rotates with defined resistance.
