Seiko Crown Diashock 21 Jewels – the Grand Seiko predecessor (Japan, ca. 1962)

Seiko Crown Diashock 21 Jewels – the Grand Seiko predecessor (Japan, ca. 1962)

The Seiko Crown was one of the most significant models in the history of Japanese watchmaking. It marked the transition from Seiko's early mechanical series to the high-precision calibers that culminated just a few years later in the first Grand Seiko (1960) .

This virtually untouched example of the Seiko Crown Diashock 21 Jewels dates from the early 1960s and is extremely rare to find in such excellent condition today.
The case shows perfectly preserved gilding, the silver sunburst dial is free of patina or scratches, and the gold-colored, faceted indices reflect the light with classic Japanese precision.

The Seiko Calibre 560 hand-wound movement with 21 jewels and Diashock shock protection represents the technological maturity that made Seiko a serious competitor to Swiss manufacturers in the early 1960s. The Crown series served as a testing ground for Seiko's chronometer programs and formed the basis for the pursuit of precision that still defines the brand today.

Historical background

The Seiko Crown, introduced in 1959, was the first model in which Seiko systematically brought precision, reliability and design up to the level of European manufacturers.
In 1960, the Crown evolved into the first Grand Seiko (Chronometer Grade) – the same philosophy, the same manufacturing, but at the highest quality level.

This makes the Crown not just a watch, but a key model in Japanese industrial history – the moment when Japan began to compete on an equal footing with Switzerland.
