Seiko Disney Time - "Bongo and Lulubelle" - early 1960s / manual winding
Seiko Disney Time - "Bongo and Lulubelle" - early 1960s / manual winding
At the heart of this exceptional Seiko is the original Disney "Bongo and Lulubelle" dial, one of the significantly rarer motifs from early Disney Time production for the Japanese market. The dial features the two characters in a playful yet graphically very clear depiction, complemented by heart motifs and a finely tuned color palette on a silver background.
Particularly noteworthy is the exceptionally good preservation of the dial: The prints are clear, the colors vibrant and not faded, and the Disney inscriptions ("Disney Time", "Bongo and Lulubelle", copyright notices) are completely and neatly preserved. Especially with these models, the dial is the decisive value driver – many examples today show heavy abrasions, discoloration, or reprints. Here, an authentic, collectible original is present.
The silver-colored hands with an arrow-shaped seconds hand pick up the playful theme without compromising readability. The domed acrylic crystal gives the watch additional depth and emphasizes its clear vintage character. The case shows age-appropriate, even signs of wear, without major damage – overall, a very harmonious state of preservation for a watch over 60 years old.
The watch is worn on a new leather strap, which was deliberately chosen to be understated in color and style so as not to dominate the dial.
Seiko and the Disney Time Models
Seiko began producing licensed Disney watches for the Japanese market as early as the late 1950s and early 1960s. Unlike many later mass-produced items, these early Disney Time models were technically full-fledged mechanical wristwatches, equipped with solid Seiko manual-wind movements.
These watches were originally aimed at a younger audience or as gift items, but they were manufactured not as toys, but as real everyday watches. This combination of serious watchmaking and an illustrative dial makes them particularly attractive to collectors today.
Within the Disney Time series, motifs such as "Bongo and Lulubelle" are among the less frequently offered variants, especially in good original condition. Accordingly, these watches are now in demand not only among Disney collectors but increasingly also among Seiko vintage collectors.
