Seiko Exceline - November 1986 - gold-plated ladies' watch with cabochon crown - Ref. 7321-0440

A slim gold-plated ladies' watch from Seiko's Exceline line, the program the company used in the 1980s to occupy the classic dress watch segment for women.

The case back is engraved with SEIKO, the markings WATER RESISTANT and SGP30 ST. STEEL BACK, the reference 7321-0440, the designation JAPAN A, and the serial number 6N0376. The dial is marked with SEIKO and Exceline, and features the movement code JAPAN 7321-1870 D at the bottom edge.

Exceline – the quiet line

Seiko's 1980s ladies' program was wide-ranging, from playful fashion watches to jewelry watches with stone settings. Exceline occupied the understated position: round cases, simple dials, no stones, no patterns.

The effort went into the details – in the gold-plated case with its stepped bezel profile, the fine-grained dial base, and the blue cabochon crown, which serves as the only color accent. These are watches that work on second glance, and that is precisely why they wear much better today than many others from the same period.

Design

A silver-white dial with a fine-grained, matte finish, featuring slender gold-colored baton indices at all twelve hours. The SEIKO logo is positioned below the 12, and Exceline in cursive script above the 6 – the only design counterpoint on an otherwise consistently geometric dial.

The hands are crafted as fine gold-colored batons. The gold-plated bezel features a stepped profile that refracts light in concentric rings. The crown is topped with a dark blue cabochon.

The black leather strap with crocodile embossing is newly fitted.

Please note: The case back marking SGP indicates the case is gold-plated (Seiko Gold Plated). This is a gold overlay, not solid gold.

Dating

The serial number 6N0376 follows Seiko's system: the first digit denotes the last digit of the year, the second the month, where N stands for November. This results in November of a year ending in 6. In conjunction with the 7321 caliber and its affiliation with the Exceline line, this points to November 1986; mathematically, 1996 would also be possible. We provide 1986 as a reference point, not as a guaranteed date.

Condition and provenance

The watch comes from a Japanese watch specialty store and was inspected there prior to sale.

The dial, indices, and hands are in perfect condition; the printing is complete and without flaws. The crystal is clear. The gold plating on the bezel and case body is intact and shows only light signs of handling; isolated small spots are visible on the lugs. The cabochon is complete and secure. The steel back shows clear signs of scuffs and scratches, though the engraving remains fully legible. The crown operates smoothly.

The black leather strap is new.
