Seiko × JR 185 Series – Limited Edition of 300, No. 264 – Ref. 7N42-HBE0 – Original Band
Japanese railway fans collect differently. When a train series is retired, an entire market for memorabilia emerges – and the watches made from them are among the most sought-after. This one was created as an official special edition for the Series 185 of the Japanese railway, limited to 300 pieces. This one bears the number 264.
The Series 185
The 185系 was one of the defining train sets of the Japanese rail network: a dual-purpose vehicle used for both local transport and as an express train, recognizable by the characteristic diagonal green stripes on an ivory background. For decades, this livery defined the look on platforms between Tokyo and the Izu Peninsula.
This exact livery is the dial: ivory background, three diagonal green stripes across the surface. At 12 o'clock sits the logo of the Japanese National Railways. Anyone familiar with the series recognizes the watch at a glance – anyone who isn't sees an unusually graphic, clearly composed dial.
The case back is engraved with Series 185 · SINCE 1981 with the reference 7N42-HBE0 as well as the individual number 264/300.
Design and character
The green aluminum bezel with the inscription COUNTDOWN and a surrounding minute scale is bidirectional and picks up the color of the stripes. The combination of a sports watch case, countdown bezel, and railway livery is unusual and works surprisingly well: the watch doesn't feel like merchandise, but rather an independent sports watch whose color scheme has a story.
The applied indices and hands are filled with luminous material; the date window is at 3 o'clock. The watch is powered by the Seiko quartz caliber 7N42 – one of the most widely built quartz movements, featuring a date display, hacking seconds when pulling out the crown, and a battery life of about three years.
The case measures 40.8 mm without the crown, with a 47.2 mm lug-to-lug and a height of 9.9 mm – a full-fledged, contemporary size. The watch is delivered on the original steel bracelet; a total weight of 114 grams gives it the solid feel of a proper sports watch. Water-resistant up to 10 bar from the factory.
Condition
Very good condition without noticeable scratches. The watch runs perfectly. The watch is delivered without the original box.
