Background to the character Kinnikuman (キン肉マン)
Kinnikuman – created by the artist duo Yudetamago (Takashi Shimada & Yoshinori Nakai) – first appeared in 1979 in the magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump . Originally intended as a parody of superheroes, the series developed into one of the biggest manga phenomena of the 1980s.
The protagonist Suguru Kinniku , a somewhat clumsy superhero from the planet Kinniku, fights against bizarre opponents in spectacular wrestling tournaments (Chōjin Olympics) – a mixture of humor, friendship and fighting spirit that achieved cult status in Japan.
The series spawned countless spin-offs, anime adaptations, and an international fanbase, especially through the US series Ultimate Muscle . In Japan, Kinnikuman is now considered one of the central figures of "Shōwa hero culture," on par with Ultraman or Mazinger Z.
The stylized “K” symbol on the dial and case back stands for “Kinniku” (筋肉, Japanese for muscle ), the central theme of the series – strength, courage and humor.
