The Lord-Matic line was positioned above the simpler Seiko 5 models in the Seiko hierarchy of the time, combining high-quality automatic movements with significantly more sophisticated case and dial designs. Characteristic of many Lord-Matic references were the precisely crafted cases, the clean applied indices, the day-date displays, and the proven 23-jewel caliber 5606. Comparable Lord-Matic models are appreciated by collectors today precisely because of this combination of wearable size, good movement quality, and typical 1970s Seiko aesthetic. 

The reference 5606-5170 is particularly attractive within the Lord-Matic series because it combines the typical 1970s design with an unusually striking case and a faceted crystal.
