Seiko Lord Marvel 36000 – 5740-8000 – Nov. 1970 – Hi-Beat, gold-plated, serviced

There are vintage Seikos that are beautiful – and there are those that are also a piece of technical history on the wrist. This Seiko Lord Marvel 36000, Ref. 5740-8000 from November 1970, undoubtedly belongs to the latter category. Whoever wears it literally wears the origin of Seiko's hi-beat era.

Why this watch is so horologically significant: In the 1960s, most movements beat at 18,000 vibrations per hour (vph). Higher frequencies promised more precision – and became a race. After the Swiss Girard-Perregaux introduced the first 36,000 bph movement (10 beats per second) in 1966, Seiko followed in 1967 with the Caliber 5740C: the first 36,000 bph movement in Japan and the second worldwide. Crucially, where Seiko first deployed this revolutionary movement was not in the top-tier Grand Seiko line, but deliberately in the Lord Marvel. The Lord Marvel series was considered a technical pioneer of the brand, and Seiko used it as a testing platform to limit the commercial risk of the new high-frequency technology before entrusting it to the prestigious King Seiko and Grand Seiko lines. This is precisely why the Lord Marvel 36000 is now considered the "grandfather" of all subsequent hi-beat models from King Seiko (45KS, Cal. 4500/4520) and Grand Seiko (61GS, Cal. 6145/6146). Without this watch, the famous 36,000 bph GS and KS would not have existed.

About the Lord Marvel line: The name harks back to the legendary "Marvel" of 1956 – one of the first entirely in-house developed Seiko movements, with which the brand established its quality claim. The "Lord Marvel" was the upscale evolution of this idea, and the 5740C movement installed here represents its technical pinnacle: a high-quality hand-wound movement with 23 jewels, fine regulation via an adjustment screw, and approximately 40 hours of power reserve. When worn, the hi-beat reveals itself immediately: hold the watch to your ear, and you hear the characteristic ten beats per second – a small acoustic pleasure that connoisseurs instantly recognize.

About the watch itself: The silver-champagne sunburst dial features applied, faceted gold indices with dark inserts, the applied "SEIKO" logo, and the "Lord Marvel 36000" lettering with the characteristic lightning bolt "S" of the Suwa Seikosha manufacture – proof that this watch comes from Suwa. It also has two-tone dauphine hands. At the bottom edge of the dial is the code "Japan 5740-8020 T AD" (the baton index variant; reference 8030 featured Arabic numerals). The gold-plated case (SGP = Seiko Gold Plated) with sharply faceted lugs is closed by a signed stainless steel case back, stamped with "Seiko" and the Suwa lightning bolt, the reference 5740-8000, "Water Resistant," and the serial number 0Nxxxx / Japan F.

Condition: The watch presents beautifully; the dial is clean, and the gold plating is largely well-preserved with at most light, typical signs of use. It was professionally serviced in Japan in early 2026 and purchased directly from the watchmaker and runs perfectly. It comes on a new, high-quality brown leather strap with a crocodile embossment.

Measurements: Diameter approx. 35 mm (without crown), lug-to-lug 41.4 mm, height 10.3 mm, lug width 19 mm. Weight including new leather strap approx. 50 g.
