Seiko Lord Matic 23J 5606-7000 – JNR Commemorative Watch (Japanese National Railways), gold-plated, serviced
Some watches tell a story – this one has it engraved on its back. This Seiko Lord Matic 23 Jewels (Ref. 5606-7000) is not just a beautiful gold-plated automatic from the early 1970s, but a genuine presentation and honor watch from the Japanese National Railways – with a dedication engraving rarely found outside Japan.
The Highlight – the engraving on the case back: The stainless steel back features two Japanese inscriptions. The top reads 効績章表彰記念 (kōseki-shō hyōshō kinen) – roughly translated as “In commemoration of the award of the meritorious service/achievement badge". The bottom reads 日本国有鉄道総裁 (Nihon Kokuyū Tetsudō Sōsai) – “President of the Japanese National Railways". Together, this means: This watch was presented by the President of the Japanese National Railways (JNR) to a deserving employee – as an award for special services to the national railway.
A brief historical context makes this tangible: The Japanese National Railways (日本国有鉄道, JNR) was Japan's state-owned railway company from 1949 until its privatization in 1987 – the corporation that, among other things, operated the legendary Shinkansen. JNR maintained the tradition of honoring long-serving and particularly meritorious employees with engraved wristwatches. Such honor and service anniversary watches are today a sought-after collecting area at the intersection of Japanese railway history (Railwayana) and vintage Seiko. Unlike an “anonymous" watch, there is a real human story behind this one: a railway worker who was honored for his performance half a century ago.
About the watch and movement: It is powered by the proven caliber 5606 from Seiko's Suwa manufacture – an automatic movement with additional manual winding and hacking seconds, 23 jewels, 21,600 vibrations/hour, and a bilingual day/date display (Kanji/English) with quick-set via the crown (push-set). The Lord-Matic line was positioned below King Seiko and Grand Seiko but used the same 56 series movement family, which in higher quality also powered the 56 King Seiko (5626) and 56 Grand Seiko (5646) – so you are wearing true KS/GS kinship on your wrist here.
About the aesthetics: The silver sunburst dial with applied, faceted gold indices, applied “SEIKO" and “LM" logo bears the inscription “Automatic / 23 Jewels" and the dial code “Japan 5606-7001 T"; day and date are positioned at 3 o'clock. The gold-plated case (SGP) with stainless steel back displays the unmistakably angular LM character of the early 1970s.
Condition and service: The watch was professionally and completely serviced in Japan in spring 2026 (complete disassembly, cleaning, oiling, regulation – photographically documented) and purchased directly from the watchmaker; it runs perfectly. Honestly noted: The gold plating shows more significant, wear-typical signs of use and brassing on edges and lugs – it visibly carries its over 50 years and its history, which suits the character of a genuine worn service watch. The dial presents itself very beautifully.
Dimensions: Case diameter approx. 36 mm (without crown), lug-to-lug 40.1 mm, height 9.3 mm, lug width 19 mm. Weight including bracelet approx. 72 g. Supplied on a period-appropriate, matching replacement bracelet from the Japanese brand Bear (gold-colored; not an original Seiko bracelet).
