Seiko Lord Matic 5601-9000 – June 1970 – Time-only Arabic, serviced

Understated, clear, timeless: This Seiko Lord Matic 23 Jewels (Ref. 5601-9000) from June 1970 is the elegant reduction of the Lord-Matic idea – a clean Arabic numeral dial without a date, powered by one of the finest production movements of its time.

The rarer caliber: While most Lord Matics are equipped with day/date (Cal. 5606), this watch features the caliber 5601 – the pure "time-only" version without a date. It is the rarest variant of the famous 56 series; only a few models were fitted with it. Technically, it is a full-fledged automatic movement with additional manual winding and hacking seconds, 23 jewels, 21,600 vibrations/hour and – at only about 4.5 mm in height – one of the thinnest automatic movements of its era. This very slimness explains the elegant case height of only 9.4 mm.

King Seiko and Grand Seiko kinship: The Lord-Matic line was positioned by Seiko directly below King Seiko and Grand Seiko – and shared their construction. The same 56 base movement is found in the 56 King Seiko (5625/5626) and the 56 Grand Seiko (5645/5646). So, whoever wears an LM 5601 has the same movement architecture on their wrist as the highly decorated KS/GS models – at a fraction of the price. The lightning "S" on the dial refers to manufacturing in the Suwa factory.

Regarding the aesthetics: The silvery-white dial with a fine linen texture, clear black Arabic numerals, applied "SEIKO" lettering, "LM Lord Matic 23 Jewels" signature, and slender hands with central seconds appears pleasantly classic and easy to read – a more elegant, restrained alternative to the usual index dials. The polished stainless steel case shows the typical sharply defined LM lines.

Condition and service: The watch is in very nice, well-maintained condition with a clear dial and sharp case contours. It was professionally and completely serviced in Japan in spring 2026 (complete disassembly, cleaning, oiling, regulation – photographically documented) and acquired directly from the watchmaker; it runs perfectly. It comes on a new, high-quality black leather strap.
