Seiko Lord Matic LM Day-Date - Ref. 5606-7000 (September 1969) – Hi-Beat "56KS" Architecture – unpolished, freshly serviced

This Seiko Lord Matic LM Day-Date 23 Jewels Ref. 5606-7000 from September 1969 is a particularly collectible piece from the first golden age of the legendary Seiko "56-series" – in two aspects that are especially valued by vintage connoisseurs: It is unpolished in original condition and was professionally and completely overhauled in Japan in January 2026. This combines two qualities that rarely come together in the vintage Seiko market.

About the Lord-Matic line and its position in the Seiko universe: The "Lord Matic" family (LM) was introduced in 1968 as a sophisticated extension of the Seiko lineup, strategically positioning itself between the widespread Seiko 5/Actus world and the top-tier King Seiko models. It offered discerning buyers the high-quality 56-Series Hi-Beat character, the elaborate 23-jewel construction, and the KS-like design – without the full King Seiko price. Important to understand: The 56 caliber was not a "downsized" variant of a KS movement, but rather the shared base caliber upon which the later 5626 architecture of the King Seiko Chronometer was built. The Lord Matic is therefore not the "little brother" of the King Seiko, but rather its direct technological pioneer – and at the same time shares this architecture with the automatic Grand Seiko 56 calibers of that era.

In the context of the historical Daini vs. Suwa rivalry, the 56-Series family belongs to the creations of Suwa Seikosha (factories in Shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture) – that second Seiko manufacture which, in the 1960s and 1970s, competed for the most precise and beautiful watches in a rivalry deliberately cultivated by corporate management with its sister factory Daini Seikosha (Tokyo). While Daini was primarily responsible for the high-priced hand-wound King Seikos (44KS, 45KS), Suwa contributed to the King Seiko line with the 56-Series and, in parallel, supplied the Lord-Matic caliber for a broader audience. This Lord Matic visibly bears this Suwa genealogy through the characteristic lightning bolt logo below the "23 JEWELS" inscription.

The Seiko 5606A caliber is a sophisticated automatic movement: 23 jewels, Hi-Beat frequency of 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour (by no means standard at the time of market launch – most ETA movements of that era ran at 18,000 or 21,600 semi-oscillations), bi-directional automatic winding, additional manual winding, hacking seconds, and quickset for day and date. The higher Hi-Beat frequency ensures a visibly smoother second hand and increased positional stability. Compared to the date-only sister 5605, the 5606 presented here also features the full day/date display – in the currently visible example with the display "月" (getsu, Monday) and the date 5.

Bilingual Day-Wheel as a JDM Feature: The day display is bilingual in Japanese Kanji and English – a characteristic feature of models exclusively intended for the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) and particularly prized by Western collectors. The day-wheel alternates between Kanji and English day display with each adjustment.

The case design of the Ref. 5606-7000 follows the clear, rectilinear design language that Seiko established in the late 1960s under the direction of design chief Taro Tanaka – that "Grammar of Design" which reached its first peak with the Grand Seiko 44GS in 1967. Characteristic features are the sharply edged, polished flanks, the contrasting brushed tops, and the short, integrated lugs. With a diameter of 35.3 mm, a height of only 9.5 mm, and a lug-to-lug of 40.2 mm, the watch is pleasantly discreet and elegant – ideal for classic wearing occasions and almost any wrist size. The silver sunburst dial features applied baton indices and slender sword hands from the KS design school, as well as the LM signature.

Unpolished Original Condition – The Central Quality Feature: The case of this watch is unpolished and preserved in its original condition. This is a significant and increasingly rare advantage for vintage Seikos: Over the decades, most vintage Seiko cases were repolished one or more times during servicing, removing material, smoothing the sharp edges, and distorting the original lines of the case defined by Taro Tanaka. In this example, the brushed tops, the sharp chamfers, and the original case edges are preserved – thus, the watch appears as it left the Suwa factory in 1969. For the collector, this means maximum originality of the case geometry and therefore a significantly higher collector's value than a repolished comparative example.

Service and technical condition: The watch was professionally and completely overhauled in Japan in January 2026 – the more than 55-year-old movement was completely disassembled, all components ultrasonically cleaned, worn parts replaced, the movement newly oiled, and regulated for accuracy and amplitude. A Japanese full overhaul is the most solid form of movement refurbishment for vintage Seiko calibers because both the specific spare parts and the factory-specific know-how are most readily available there. The watch runs accordingly precisely and reliably.

Scope of delivery: The watch comes with a new original Seiko leather strap (stamped "SEIKO" on the inside, lug width 19 mm) in black with a stainless steel pin buckle – a brand-appropriate and harmonious combination that perfectly highlights the silver sunburst dial and polished case flanks.

Condition: Overall a very well preserved, unpolished example with only subtle signs of wear/use appropriate for its age. Case edges and brushing are original; dial is clean and even; applied indices are complete and sharp; original hands; original crown functions perfectly; bilingual Day-Date works correctly with quickset. Movement is reliable and precise after a fresh Japanese full overhaul (January 2026).

Overall, a sophisticated vintage Seiko, technically and aesthetically closely related to the top King Seiko models, in rare unpolished original quality with a fresh Japanese overhaul – ideal for collectors who appreciate the KS design vocabulary and the genuine 56-series Hi-Beat mechanism at a moderate price point and in maximum originality.
