Anyone who collects Seiko knows what this means: This watch comes from Daini Seikosha in Tokyo – and not from Suwa. This is remarkable, because the common Lord Matic with the 5606 caliber was a Suwa product. Seiko therefore had the same model line built in parallel by both competing factories.

Two factories, one model line

For decades, Seiko maintained two completely separate production operations that competed against each other: Suwa Seikosha in Nagano Prefecture and Daini Seikosha in Tokyo. Both developed their own movements, maintained their own model lines, and vied for the top position. Suwa launched the first Grand Seiko in 1960; Daini responded in 1961 with the first King Seiko. Corporate management explicitly encouraged this competition – whoever built the better movement won the order.

This is clearly evident in the Lord Matic. The line was released in 1968 and occupied the upscale mid-range: above the Seiko 5, and below the King Seiko and Grand Seiko. Suwa supplied the 5606 caliber for it, while Daini supplied the 5206 caliber. Two movements, two designs, one model name.

The Daini version carried the additional "Special" designation – the higher-regulated variant within the series. You can identify it immediately by the dial: beneath the 23 JEWELS marking, the lightning bolt of the Tokyo factory appears instead of the Suwa swirl.

For collectors, that is the point. Four out of five Lord Matics you see offered are Suwa 5606s. The Daini Special is the rarer side of the same series – and it costs hardly any more.

The 5206 caliber

The bilingual day wheel follows the Japanese calendar convention: Sunday in red, Saturday in blue. In the photo, Sunday 日 is shown in red – a detail not found on European watches that reveals the watch's origin at a glance.

The list of features was remarkably complete in 1972. Many European automatic movements in the same price range offered neither manual winding nor hacking seconds; the combination of both, plus a quick-set for day and date, was what distinguished a watch in the Japanese catalog from the entry-level class.

The dial

The real highlight of this watch is the color: a deep, vibrant blue with a vertical satin finish that refracts light in vertical bands. If you tilt the watch, a bright streak moves from one side to the other, while the edges fade into darkness.

Blue dials were fashionable in Japan in the early 1970s, but Seiko used them sparingly on the Lord Matic. They are significantly rarer than the standard silver versions – and they pair better with a steel bracelet than with leather.

The hour markers are applied, faceted batons with polished flanks; at twelve o'clock, a golden double index serves as the only color accent. This is accompanied by broad, longitudinally brushed hands and a fine center-sweep seconds hand.

The dial is signed with the applied SEIKO logo at the top and LM Special / 23 JEWELS with the Daini lightning bolt at the bottom. The calendar window at three o'clock is framed by an applied border.

Case

The stainless steel case follows the design language that Taro Tanaka formulated at Seiko as the "Grammar of Design": flat, sharply defined surfaces instead of rounded transitions, angular lugs, and a flat polished bezel. Tanaka's principle was that each surface should reflect light in a defined direction – which only works as long as the edges remain sharp.

With a diameter of 35.3 mm and a lug-to-lug of only 38 mm, the watch is unusually compact. This makes it unproblematic even on slim wrists – dimensions that are hard to find today.

A special note regarding strap selection: the lug width is 17 mm, not the 18 or 19 mm common for Seiko. If you intend to mount a different strap later, you should keep this in mind when purchasing.

Condition

Technically flawless. The watch was professionally serviced in Japan in the spring/summer of 2026 – fully disassembled, cleaned, oiled, and regulated. The automatic mechanism, manual winding, hacking seconds, and quick-set for day and date function perfectly.

The dial is well-preserved: the vertical satin finish is intact across the surface, and the color is uniform with no fading or spots. The lettering is complete and sharp, the applied indices are firm with no corrosion, and the calendar frame is intact. A few tiny dots are visible upon close inspection, but they are imperceptible while wearing the watch.

The stainless steel case shows age-appropriate signs of wear, which are slightly more noticeable on the bezel edge. The surface transitions are preserved; the watch has not been over-polished. The case back exhibits the usual fine scratches from opening and wearing, but all markings – reference 5206-6090, serial number, Daini lightning bolt – are complete and clearly legible. The crystal is clear.

The watch is fitted with a third-party stainless steel bracelet that matches the watch well in color and feel. It is not the original Seiko bracelet.

Who it is for

For collectors who want to fully document the Seiko movement rivalry. If you already own a Lord Matic with the Suwa 5606 caliber, this provides the counterpart from Daini – the same series, a different movement, and a different symbol on the dial.

For those looking for a colored dial that is not "loud." Depending on the light, the blue appears almost black or vibrant, and the vertical satin finish gives it a depth that printed colored dials lack.

And for slim wrists: 38 mm lug-to-lug with a 35.3 mm diameter are dimensions that are practically no longer built today.
