Seiko Lord Matic Special 5206-6120 – Hi-Beat – February 1973 – black dial – freshly serviced

Lord Matic – but in the technically more sophisticated "Special" version.

This Seiko Lord Matic Special Ref. 5206-6120 dates from February 1973 and is one of the most interesting mechanical Seiko models just before the final breakthrough of the quartz watch.

While the regular Lord-Matic models mostly came from Suwa and used movements from the 56xx family, Daini Seikosha developed its own movement family for the LM Special: the compact and high-frequency 52xx calibers.

The result was a remarkably flat, technically sophisticated automatic watch with 28,800 vibrations per hour.

Lord Matic Special – the second LM line

The regular Lord Matic appeared in the late 1960s. In the early 1970s, the Lord Matic Special followed, manufactured by Daini Seikosha.

These models used the 52xx movement family and combined a higher frequency with a particularly compact design. The LM Special thus differed significantly in technical terms from the regular 56LM models.

The caliber 5206A operates at 28,800 A/h, has 23 jewels, and offers manual winding, hacking seconds, and a day-date calendar with quick-set function.

The 52xx family was so technically interesting that Seiko later revisited its basic construction as the starting point for the high-quality 4S movement family.

Design

This example has a deep black dial with strong contrast between the applied silver-colored indices and the dark surface.

The fine cross-hatching of the minute track and the vertical line between 12 and 6 o'clock give the dial an almost technical, instrument-like appearance.

At 3 o'clock is the bilingual day-date display; in the photo, the day of the week is shown in Kanji – a nice detail that immediately highlights its Japanese Domestic Market character.

Above 6 o'clock, Special is written in script, and below it, 23 Jewels.

Compact High-Beat Technology

With only 35 mm in diameter and 9.8 mm in height, this LM Special is surprisingly flat.

Precisely therein lay the technical appeal of the 5206: Seiko combined a high beat rate and full calendar function with a relatively compact movement.

The result is a watch that looks elegant and understated on the wrist, yet is technically much more sophisticated than its size would suggest.

Dating

The serial number 321833 dates the piece to February 1973.

The reference 5206-6120 is well documented for this early 1970s period. Comparable models are also dated to 1972/73.

Condition and Service

The watch shows age-appropriate signs of wear on the case, crystal, and bracelet.

The black dial presents itself very attractively and has a particularly strong JDM character due to the silver-colored indices and the Kanji day display.

The watch was professionally and completely serviced in Japan in spring 2026.

The condition is shown unretouched in the product photos.
