Seiko Mechanical JNR Stopwatch – Hokkaido – Shōwa 39 / 1964 – Japan National Railways

A true working instrument of the Japanese National Railways – and considerably rarer than the well-known railway pocket watches.

This mechanical Seiko stopwatch comes from the inventory of the former Japanese National Railways – 日本国有鉄道 (JNR).

The case back bears the service identification:

Shōwa 39 corresponds to the year 1964.

The character 北 indicates the Hokkaido railway region.

Thus, the watch is not merely a historical Seiko stopwatch, but an example actually marked as a professional measuring instrument of the Japanese State Railway.

More than a Railway Watch

The well-known JNR pocket watches primarily served to display and synchronize service time.

A stopwatch, on the other hand, had a different purpose: it could be used for measuring specific driving, operational, and work processes.

Precisely for this reason, preserved original JNR stopwatches are considerably rarer on the market today than ordinary railway pocket watches.

Historical Japanese railway dealers document Seiko/Seikosha stopwatches with JNR or railway administration engravings on the back as a distinct category of service instruments.

The Year 1964

1964 is a particularly significant year for Japanese railway history.

On October 1, 1964, the Tokaido Shinkansen began operation between Tokyo and Osaka.

The present watch thus dates precisely from the year in which Japan set a new global standard for high-speed rail transport with the Shinkansen.

However, the engraving assigns this specific stopwatch to the Hokkaido region; it should therefore not be referred to as a Shinkansen instrument. Nevertheless, the contemporary historical context makes the year of issue particularly appealing.

Function and Dial

The white dial is entirely designed for time measurement.

The outer scale counts 60 seconds, while the small totalizer at 12 o'clock measures up to 30 minutes.

The central long second hand allows for very precise reading.

Unlike a normal watch, the focus here is not on the time of day, but exclusively on measuring time intervals.

Condition

The stopwatch is in authentic vintage condition.

The case and back show visible signs of wear from several decades. The historical JNR marking is still clearly recognizable.

The dial is exceptionally legible and presents itself as generally attractive.

A recent overhaul is not documented.

The actual condition is shown unretouched in the product photos.

JNR service watches are now collected internationally. However, stopwatches form a significantly smaller group within this area.
