Seiko Instruments – the other half of the group

In the West, Seiko is perceived as a watch manufacturer. Within the group, however, there is also Seiko Instruments, a company that has been producing metronomes, tuners, and musical electronics for professional use for decades—a given in Japan, but virtually unknown in Europe.

Both business areas share the same fundamental requirement: the precise timing of a quartz crystal. The Metronome Watch combines them in one housing.

It is aimed at musicians who do not want to carry an extra device during lessons, rehearsals, or backstage. The manufacturer’s promotional text describes the situations precisely: checking a tempo marking on a sheet of music while on the train, or unobtrusively holding the concert pitch to your ear just before a performance off-stage. It is a watch designed based on the everyday lives of orchestral musicians.

Function

The metronome range extends from 40 to 304 beats per minute, divided into 41 fixed steps, with an accuracy of ±0.2%. This allows the watch to cover the entire spectrum from Largo to Prestissimo.

The tuner function offers six variations: concert pitch A and the B♭ common in brass bands, each in 440, 442, and 443 Hertz. While a difference of a few Hertz is imperceptible to laypeople, it is a daily practical issue for orchestral musicians—European, Japanese, and American orchestras tune differently.

Operation is performed via the hands themselves: for timekeeping, the broad part of the hand points to the inner scale; when setting the tempo or pitch, the fine tip points to the outer one.

Design

The dual function is visible without needing explanation. On the wide outer ring, the metronome scale runs from 40 to 304 in a color gradient from white through lilac to deep violet, with dots between the numbers as known from mechanical metronomes. At the top edge, the labels NOTE, METRONOME, and PITCH are positioned above their corresponding values.

Set further inward is the dial itself: silver-colored with a fine sunburst finish, Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9, with slender indices in between. It is kept deliberately calm so that the functional layer on the outside can stand out.

The purple version with the gradient dial is one of the more unusual color variants in the series and is regularly highlighted in Japanese reviews as the most interesting in terms of design. The case is gold-colored, and the strap is a light lilac.

Dating

This is a model from the current series. It is not dated using a serial number.

Condition and Provenance

The watch is from Japan and is new and unworn.

The dial, scale ring, hands, crystal, case, and strap are free of signs of wear. The original product tag is still attached. The original box is included.
