Seiko and the Japanese Railway

Seiko's connection with the Japanese railway dates back to 1929.

In that year, Seiko pocket watches were selected for professional railway service. From then on, a very durable series of large, particularly legible pocket watches for train personnel and other railway employees was developed.

The basic design remained astonishingly constant for decades: a large, bright dial, strong Arabic numerals, precise minute divisions, and easily recognizable hands.

Alongside it is the individual number 272 and an additional Kanji-based service marking.

Design – uncompromising readability

The large white dial measures around 50 mm together with the case.

The black Arabic numerals have that characteristic typographical form immediately associated with Japanese Railway Watches.

Strong black hour and minute hands provide a strong contrast to the dial. The long central second hand can be precisely read against the surrounding minute track.

There is no superfluous decoration here: everything about this watch was designed for quick and reliable time reading.

Condition

The watch is in authentic used vintage condition.

The case and case back show significant signs of wear and scratches. These are not unusual for a historic service watch and are part of its history.

The bright dial is well preserved and the important inscriptions are clearly legible.

The original service engraving on the back is clearly visible.
