Seiko Presage URUSHI SPB405J1 - Craftsmanship series

Seiko Presage URUSHI SPB405J1 - Craftsmanship series

The SPB405J1 represents Japanese lacquer art in its purest form. In the Presage Craftsmanship series, centuries-old Urushi lacquer techniques meet modern 6R generation mechanical watchmaking. The deep black dial is meticulously handcrafted by lacquer artist Isshu Tamura and his team – layer by layer, natural Urushi lacquer is applied, dried, and polished until this unparalleled depth, serenity, and velvety brilliance is achieved.

Urushi is more than just paint: the lacquer is alive, reacting to light and revealing an almost mirror-like depth depending on the viewing angle, a depth that cannot be industrially reproduced. Every surface is subtly different, every watch unique. The crisp white indices stand in deliberate contrast to the black lacquer surface, ensuring excellent legibility without disrupting the tranquility of the dial.

Lacquer artist: Isshu Tamura

Isshu Tamura, born in 1957, was trained in the traditional Kaga-Makie gold lacquer technique in Kanazawa – under the guidance of the renowned master Ikko Kiyose . After years of intensive training, he developed his own distinctive style in lacquer art.

His work is characterized by exceptional depth, precision, and serenity. Isshu Tamura employs the Kaga Makie technique not only on classic lacquerware but also on luxury fountain pens and wristwatches. His pieces are internationally acclaimed and are considered an example of how centuries-old craftsmanship can be translated into modern objects without losing its cultural origins.

The watch is powered by the automatic 6R55 movement with a power reserve of up to 72 hours – this three-day movement is being used for the first time in the Presage Craftsmanship series. The redesigned case, with its finely crafted angles and balanced proportions, subtly frames the dial, deliberately allowing the lacquerwork to take center stage. Traditional craftsmanship, modern technology, and a clear, timeless design – reduced to the essentials.
