Seiko Presmatic Hi-Beat 5146-7030 (January 1970)
Seiko Presmatic Hi-Beat 5146-7030 (January 1970)
The Seiko Presmatic Hi-Beat 5146-7030 is an elegant automatic model from the transition period between the Presmatic and the later Lord-Matic series.
It was manufactured in January 1970 at the Daini Seikosha factory , making it one of the last models of the Presmatic series before Seiko replaced it with the more efficiently designed 56xx caliber family.
The caliber 5146A used in the watch is a technically advanced automatic movement with 27 jewels and a high-beat frequency (28,800 A/h) . It already featured a fine regulation mechanism and a very reliable day/date function.
The vertically brushed “linen dial” with applied indices, the clear lettering Presmatic Hi-Beat 27 Jewels and the Seiko-typical lightning symbol represent the high manufacturing quality of this short but influential model line.
Historical background:
The Presmatic series was introduced in 1967 and was Seiko's first model family to consistently rely on precise automatic movements with 28,800 A/h – an intermediate step between the chronometer-certified King Seiko/Grand Seiko and the later, mass-produced Lord Matic models.
The goal was to offer an elegant everyday watch with the accuracy and smooth running of the Hi-Beat technology, at a more affordable price than the Grand Seiko. The Presmatic also served as a technical testing ground for new automatic systems (including further developments of the Magic Lever).
