Design and background
The 2C21 series exemplifies Seiko's focus on precision, reliability, and slim design in the 1980s. Following the worldwide success of its first quartz watches in the 1970s, Seiko shifted its focus to elegant, everyday models with clean lines.
This watch follows the Japanese "Grammar of Design" philosophy , developed by Taro Tanaka in the late 1960s: sharp edges, reflective surfaces, and perfect legibility. The result is a purist timepiece that, despite its simplicity, offers the highest technical precision.
Historical context
Seiko's introduction of quartz technology in 1969 with the legendary Astron 35SQ revolutionized the entire watch industry. In the following years, Seiko perfected the technology and, from the early 1980s onward, created a wide range of quartz models – from sporty chronographs to ultra-thin dress watches like this one.
The reference 2C21-0120 was created during this phase as part of the transitional generation between the technically sophisticated 1970s models and the elegantly reduced lines of the late 1980s.
