Seiko Quartz 2620-0010 – June 1979 – Cal. 2620 from Daini Seikosha – Roman numerals, only 6.2mm thin

A white dial, black Roman numerals, a gold-plated rim with a faceted bezel – a dress watch needs no more. This small Seiko follows the design logic that defined the classic suit watch in the 1980s: maximum tranquility, minimal fuss.

Design and Character

The dial is pure white and features a complete wreath of printed Roman numerals, framed by two fine minute tracks. The hands are slender and black; a секунд hand is deliberately absent, keeping the dial completely calm. The Seiko signet is located below the center.

The gold-plated bezel is multi-faceted and refracts light at its edges; together with the short, curved lugs, it creates a very restrained, classic silhouette.

The Caliber 2620

The watch is powered by the Seiko quartz caliber 2620, which was developed in the late 1970s at Daini Seikosha's Kameido factory – the same facility that also produced King Seiko and Grand Seiko. The 2620 was designed for thin, elegant dress watches and was featured in Seiko's upscale dress lines.

Its height demonstrates its purpose: 6.2 millimeters overall, including case and crystal. This was only achievable with quartz movements in the late 1970s, and it's why the watch disappears under any cuff.

The case back is stamped SEIKO · SGP BACK ST. STEEL · 960549 · 2620-0010 · JAPAN-C. "SGP" stands for Seiko Gold Plated – the case is gold-plated, and the back is made of stainless steel. We state this explicitly to clarify the material specification from the outset.

The serial number 960549 dates the watch to June 1979.

With a diameter of 30.8 mm and weighing 29 grams, the watch is distinctly small – exactly what a dress watch of this design logic should be. It comes on a new black leather strap.
