Seiko Quartz 7830-8000 – March 1977 – only 6.4mm thin – Tropical Dial – new Milanese bracelet

6.4 millimeters thick. This figure is the reason to buy this small Seiko from March 1977 – and in the mid-1970s, it was only achievable with quartz. What sounds like a given today was the actual appeal of the new technology back then: not just the accuracy, but what it made possible in terms of design.

The early Seiko quartz generation

In 1969, Seiko had introduced the world's first quartz wristwatch with the Astron. By the mid-1970s, this had evolved into large-scale production, and engineers began to explore how much space could be saved by eliminating the mainspring barrel, balance wheel, and winding rotor.

The result is watches like this one: The caliber 7830 powers only the hour and minute hands as well as the second hand; there is no date, no additional function – and thus a case that disappears under any cuff.

The case back bears the engraving SEIKO · STAINLESS STEEL · 7830-8000 with the serial number 732458, which dates the watch to March 1977.

Design and character

The tropical dial has a very beautiful champagne tone. The dial features a fine sunburst finish and slim, applied baton indices; the hands are kept equally restrained. Below the center is the Seiko quartz emblem. No date, no lettering other than the brand – a design that relies entirely on serenity.

The tonneau-shaped stainless steel case is softly rounded and polished; with a 32.5 mm diameter, a 37.3 mm lug-to-lug, and the aforementioned 6.4 mm height, the watch is distinctly compact. 55 grams including the bracelet.

The fine-mesh Milanaise bracelet is in mint condition – no frayed weave, no compressed edges, which one almost always finds on mesh straps of this age. It wraps seamlessly around the wrist and gives the watch its understated, almost jewelry-like character. Anyone who likes mesh knows how rare a strap in this condition is.

Condition

The case and crystal are in good condition commensurate with their age and show only a few scratches.
