Seiko Quartz Railwayman's Pocket Watch (1982) – Ref. 7550-0010

Seiko Quartz Railwayman's Pocket Watch (1982) – Ref. 7550-0010

A rare and historically significant Seiko Railway Pocket Watch (鉄道時計), manufactured for the Japan National Railways (国鉄 – Kokutetsu).
This watch was used in the early 1980s by train drivers and railway personnel of the Hokkaido Railway Division (北釧) and is one of the coveted official service watches that Seiko produced exclusively for the Japanese railway network.

Historical Background

Engraved on the back of the case:
昭57 (Shōwa 57) = 1982
This specimen was therefore clearly issued in 1982, i.e., from the late phase of the Japan National Railways (JNR), shortly before its dissolution and privatization (JR Group, 1987).

The engraving 国鉄北釧 stands for "Japanese National Railways, Hokkaido District" – a regional allocation found only on officially issued models.

Such railway watches were subjected to strict precision requirements and had to be regularly inspected and certified by Seiko for official train conductors.

Description

This pocket watch is an authentic piece of Japanese railway history.
The clear, perfectly legible dial with finely crafted Arabic numerals was specially designed for precise time reading in railway operations.
The robust stainless steel case and reliable quartz movement exemplify Seiko's technical excellence in the early 1980s.

Due to the engraving 昭57 (1982) and the designation 国鉄北釧, it can be clearly assigned to a specific JNR region – a rarity among collectors.

It is ideal as a collector's item, a gift for railway or Japan enthusiasts, or as a symbolic birthday gift with a historical vintage.

Collector's Value and Significance

Genuine Seiko railway watches with JNR engraving are rare, especially in good original condition.
They are considered technical cult objects of Japanese precision history and are highly valued by collectors.
