The alarm clock is a Seiko with a mechanical hand-wound movement in a round folding case. The cover features a blue print with a diamond emblem, identifying it as an anniversary or promotional gift from a company.

The travel alarm clock as a category

Folding-case travel alarm clocks were a standard item from the 1960s to the 1980s: robust enough for a suitcase, small enough for a bedside drawer, and completely independent of a wall outlet. Seiko produced them in large numbers – some for retail, some as printed promotional editions for companies that distributed them to customers and employees for anniversaries.

It is precisely these printed editions that are the more interesting pieces today. They were not sold, but given away, produced in limited numbers, and document a piece of Japanese corporate culture that has not been preserved elsewhere.

The principle is captivatingly simple: the case opens and serves as a stand; inside are the winding wheels for the movement and the alarm, as well as the regulator and a push-button to stop the alarm.

Design

The gold-colored dial has a fine sunburst finish and features bold black Arabic numerals – an alarm clock must be readable from two meters away and with tired eyes. Small, star-shaped ornaments are placed between the numerals, adding a decorative touch to the otherwise functional dial.

The hands are coated with luminous material, as are the dots on the inner minute track – ensuring the time remains legible at night. The Seiko logo is located below the 12, and the jewel count is below the center of the dial.

The exterior of the case is finished in a cream-colored, grained material, with a gold-colored interior. The controls on the back are explained with embossed pictograms; the push-button labeled PUSH STOP is at the top.

Dating

The alarm clock has no serial number and no manufacturing date. The design, dial layout, and movement execution place it in the 1970s.

Condition

The alarm clock is running. The dial is well-preserved, the prints are complete, the hands are undamaged, and the luminous material is present. The crystal is clear.

The case and bezel show clear signs of wear: the gold-colored rim shows abrasion and discoloration; the case shell is rubbed and shows soiling. The anniversary print on the cover is complete but faded due to age. The hinge operates cleanly, and the case stands stably.
