SEIKO S-682 Universal Movement Holder (万能機械台) – Machine Stand for Movement Assembly | Original SEIKO Japan
Original SEIKO watchmaker's tool, imported directly from Japan – rarely available outside Japan.
The Universal Movement Holder S-682 ("Bannō Kikaidai") is the holder that SEIKO itself prescribes in its official service documents: In SEIKO's Technical Guides and inspection/adjustment instructions, depending on the caliber, either a caliber-specific movement holder or this universal model is specified for disassembling and assembling the movements. Anyone overhauling SEIKO calibers according to factory documentation uses exactly this tool.
The holder consists of a transparent acrylic block with four rubberized support blocks. The cross-shaped grooves between the blocks serve a crucial purpose: the movement can be placed face down even with the hands attached – hour, minute, and second hands freely enter the groove and are not stressed. The rubberized supports prevent slipping and scratching; the arrangement accommodates movements of various diameters, from small ladies' calibers to large automatic movements. The holder is also the standard tool for dial work and cleaning steps in everyday Japanese workshops.
What distinguishes this tool from European counterparts:
Classic European movement holders (e.g., Bergeon 4039/4040) clamp the movement by its edge – ideal for working on the bare movement, but unsuitable once the dial and hands are mounted. This is exactly the gap the S-682 fills: It supports the movement from the dial side without putting pressure on the hands or dial – the working method for which SEIKO designed its calibers and which is assumed in every SEIKO Technical Guide. While Far Eastern acrylic replicas are available, they do not achieve the dimensional accuracy or rubber quality of the original – and the original from the SEIKO tool program is not regularly sold in Europe.
